year and model

Hey guys i am a newbie here, and really pretty green when it comes to motors in general. I have received a motor from a friend and am unsure of the model and year of it. The cowling says an 85 horse but does not look like factory cowling... He thought it was a 1990... I have looked on the motor for serial number but obviously am looking in the wrong spots... any help would be greatly apprec.

may want to give more info or post a pic as to what you have, and you may get more help.

Here is what I can tell you about where to find serial numbers on outboards from a quick web search
look closely at the motor mounting bracket. I don't have any knowledge about this topic but the web has
plenty of reference if you can find serial number on it somewhere.

If you post the s/n and model number we will be able to tell you for sure what yeah and model you have. Also pictures help a great deal.
