Year of 140 Mercruiser ?

Picked up an old boat with a 140 mercruiser in it and and trying to identify year of motor and outdrive model. Motor s/n 3990150, cannot find #'s on out drive but looks original. Its either an R model or Alpha 1 from what I can tell without splitting upper and lower units. Thanks in advance

Without somemore numbers off the block I cannot get closer with the year model. But its between 1972-1978 year model. That would make the outdrive an "R" drive.

Thats about the range I figured. Close enough. S/n is off the Valve cover. Was the only # I could find. Once motor is out I'll look for a stamped one on the block.<br />Thanks Trent

The outdrive s/n is under the port side "Mercruiser" decal. You must peel it off to read the number. If its an "R" or "MR" outdrive, it will have a loop cast into the top of the gearcase, and ribs cast into the sides of the gearcase as well. Alpha outdrives have a smooth gearcase cover (with no loop), and no ribs on both sides.

Hello : We have an issue with boat I.D. also. Sea Ray SRV 170 Serial # 6171784. Stern Drive # 2001810. We haven't been able to find out what year boat is, or engine size. 4 cylinder Mercruiser I/O. Any suggestions ? Thanks lots, raceri69
