4253 1.1hp 1938 & Elto is correct. I think it's a "Pal". I gave one to my cousin, who has become a collector (has>20 motors now from 0 a few years ago).

The Elto (Evinrude Light Twin Outboard) brand has a bit of an interesting story. It was actually started by Mr Evinrude himself, 9 years after he sold off his Evinrude company when he was sick. He eventually bought Johnson, (outboard leader at the time) and his old company, Evinrude back, and started OMC by combining the two.

The Eltos are more of a bare bones version of the Johnny Rudes, but still have quite a following. Never had one myself, but would if the price was right.

Chris, the old timers aren't that much ... most good condition runners go for ~ $250, not fully restored. Fully restored, $450 to ~$800, depending on rarety. The prices are best at meets, There's one @ Tommahawk, WI every year. The sellers are fussy though ... they want their prizes to only go to good homes. My cousin goes to that one annually.

$250?? That's if you're lucky. Those are cool little motors though. I had an Evinrude Ranger, the same year once. I't's the 1.1 hp model, as well. These were basically the second smallest motors OMC built.
wilde1j, I think the motors you're thinking that will bring $450 - $800 are the 1940 Mates 1/2hp's simply because they are more scarce that the 1.1hp models. The 1.1 hp models were actually a lot better built engine and held up better, so there are a lot more of them around today. The Mates and Cubs on the other hand, were prone to faster wear on their piston and cylinders and ignition systems often gave problems.
