Newby here....so thanks in advance.

I'm considering purchasing an older johnson 25 model number 25rl70e. Am i correct in assuming this is a 1970 model?

Are parts and manuals fairly available for this motor? Anything in particular good or bad about this model that anyone is aware of?

Thanks

Welcome.
You are right,it is a 1970 engine.
It is a fine engine with no problems to speak of. BUT,before you buy do a compression test and ask the seller to run the engine and let it run for a while. If the seller starts it in his driveway without connecting any water supply to the lower unit, don't buy and get out.If the compression is good(90#+ in both cylinders with both cylinders within 10% of each other) and it runs when started you should be ok.
good luck.

You cannot run this motor on muffs. Ask the seller if you can run it in a barrel, with the water atleast 3/4 the way up the lower unit.
best would be to take it out on a boat and amke sure it doesn't jump out of gear. It's at the age where clutch dogs start to go bad. Maybe take it to a marine dealer and have him run it in his test tank.

Also, check lower unit oil for water and metal before buying.
