Hi guys another question for you after failing to find parts for my 68 evinrude 85 ive been offered another motor its a mercury classic 50 s/no9474201 its supposed to be a 1986 50 hp is this correct its in good running order are these motors any good i would be putting it on a 1975 16ft fletcher speedboat thats rated between 40-90hp thanks mick

Hi Mick<br />Actually it's a 1987 Model 50 HP.(50 9469200 - 9506135 1987). They are fine motors and you should have little problems with it. Check the compression and lower unit fluid to see if it's sound. Compression should be at least 100 PSI on all cylinders and within 10% of each other. Drain the lower unit and look for any sign of water intrusion. Try to take it for a test run or at least put the Muffs on it and fire it up.

Might think about putting a new water pump impeller in it - they don't last too long in that model. If it's cooling OK during the test run, there'll be lukewarm water coming from the telltale and the exhaust plate will be just a little warmer than the lake you're in (large flat plate covering the rear half of the port side of the motor, under the wrap-around cowl). <br /><br />16' is getting towards a full load for that motor, if you buy it recommend you make sure the prop pitch is low enough.

Thanks for the replies, I got to test run the motor this morning as it was already fitted to an old (1960,s) broom 14ft boat and ended up buying the complete set up the motor was serviced 18 months ago and used twice since it ran fine didnt like idling at first but cleared up after an hours use. I will run it as it is for a few weeks then swap the motor and controls over to the fletcher 16ft as it is in real good condition compared with the broom thanks again mick
