Year of mercury outboard

I just purchased a mercury outboard with a pontoon. I know the pontoon is a 93 but I can not find anything from the serial on the outboard. It is a mercury serial plate and is a 50hp motor. The serial is A188399 and it is a 4 cyl. I have looked at a lot of charts including here but do not find this number. Am I looking at the charts wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having no luck with the serial number. If the starter is original the manufacture date might be stamped on it.
