I just contacted Mercury for some help in identifying what year a motor is. I gave the rep the serial number and she looked it up for me. The records were not in the computer as to the age of the motor. But she did have paper records and took no time at all for her to look it up. She said:
1978 model years started with the numbers 483
1979 model years started with the numbers 520
Since the serial number in question started with 499 she was able to determine it was in that year range.
The phone number I called was 920-929-5040.
