Year of Yamaha 40 hp Outboard

I want to find out the model year of my Yamaha 40HP.
Just bought the boat and motor and there are letters/or numbers on both sides of the transom clamp.
On the one side it reads 40 ELN. But on the other side it reads 6H4 then the engraved numbers 401184. I am assuming it is a 1984. Is that correct? Thanks for any response.

Yup.1984.

On Yamahas the second to last letter indicates the year. Here is a link to the chart. It looks as if your motor is a 1986.

so mine being an E is really old? it's not on your chart....must be from 76?

It is definitely a 1984 model.

40 - hp

E - Manual tilt, electric start

L - Long leg (20")

N - Year designation, 1984
