year range for replacement 15 hp lower unit?

I have a 15 hp Evinrude long shaft electric start outboard in need of a new lower unit. The model# is15455s which I think makes it a 1974 model. What year range models are compatible? Do I need a 15 hp lower or can I use maybe a 10 or 20 hp lower? Thanks for any insight.

only 9.9 or 15 hp models made from 1974-2005

ofcourse 10xp johnson/evinrude models made in some years will fit also but should belong to this 9.9/15hp line

are long and short shaft lowers the same besides the driveshaft? It looks like the spacer on the housing is what makes it a long shaft or maybe I have an extra long shaft?

The driveshaft and lower shift rod are both longer on the long shaft motors. And there's an adapter
in the spacer that extends water pump output up to the copper tube in the exhaust housing. There
are usually several lower units on e-bay at any given time.
