My 13 yr old and I took our "new" old boat on its first ride today. We just went to a no-wake lake to idle around and fish a little, and make sure that it did not overheat at idle.

Thanks to a lot of folks here on this forum... my ramp activities were smooth and quick. The launch was fast. Rigged up in the parking area, left the winch strap and safety chain on. Backed down, with the wheels in the water, handed my daughter the bow line, unhooked the strap and chain (forgot to unplug the trailer...) and backed in and popped the boat right off. The courtesy dock was full of sailboats with nobody in sight, so we pulled the boat over onto the sand and I pulled the truck off the ramp. I bet we were not on the ramp three minutes.

Boat ran pretty good, have some bugs to chase out... mostly fuel line related (old fittings for the tanks) and maybe the electrical system is not generating a high enough voltage. I'm not too concerned yet.

Getting back on the trailer was a bit trickier, but not too bad. Sailboats still on the dock (GRrrrrrrrrr....) so we beached again. I backed down (shallow this time, right?) put some slack in the winch and told my daughter to hook it up when I got close. Pushed the boat out, fired it up, and in spite of a quartering tail wind it lined up the first time. We hooked up the strap, winched it tight, put on the safety chain, and pulled off. This was a little longer, but still no more than 4 or 5 minutes. Yes, I still had not remembered to unplug the trailer. Luckily the bulbs all still work.

A no-frustration trip! I think we can do this. Thanks for all the great tips.

Glad to hear you and your daughter had a good trip! My first launches went (more or less :p ) smooth because of the good advice I got from iboats as well.

sounds like a good first trip.....I have a pretty good launching routine down but I forget to unplug those damn trailer lights like 50% of the time.

Way to be prepared and do all the research BEFORE you hit the water the first time.

Hope there are many more like it to come!

Good for you! And you kept your cool too. Damn lake trash. Although I don't know what else the sail boats would do, it's kinda hard to beach with a 4-6 ft. keel. But if they were gonna be that long it they should have done something a little more courteous.

Sounds like you are ready for a speed run now.

I like that you took the time to be aware of good ramp etiquette.

Boat dealers in our are don't even care about anything but sales. So it's always a hassle when we go to the lake in the summer. I have even found some spots where I can launch away from the ramp with my 4X4.

I hope this is the beginning of a great family sport for you!

wait you have to unplug the trailer lights before going the water??? I did not know that I have not unplugged them yet and they still work. Is that bad to do?

And im glad you had a good time with your daughter!

Yeah... we had a blast. This was our second try to get on the water. The first time I lost a bearing buddy on the way to the lake. They now are lock-tited on, and I am carrying a couple of spare plain-Jane bearing caps too.

I think i read somewhere on here that it is good practice to unplug your trailer before backing it into the water, even if you have sealed light housings. I guess that maybe the cold water on a hot bulb will break it. Dunno for sure.

Yes... we need to find a lake that will let us go run a bit now. Unfoul the plugs and that sort of thing :)

Thanks for all the kind words. See you on the water!

I have never done that in the three years I have had a boat and I put more hours on my boat in a season than most people I know in five seasons. Maybe they are sealed not sure though. I just know they work.
