Re: yellow goooo

If it's a magneto ignition, you should be able to get the parts from Grubbs. Have you looked for a stamped serial number on the block? Should be one somewhere.

I have changed the coils on my 1962 Merc 110, not a big deal. Might try new condenser first, or swap condensers. I'm assuming you cleaned and gapped the points.

The "goo" sounds like it might be some kind of insulating grease, which suggests that the coild might have been replaced before. You could also swap coils and see if the problem goes with it.

Don't overlook shorting wires.

Some people use dielectric grease when mounting coils, but I don't think it's necessary with this type. The spark plug wire just pushes into a hole on the coil. There is some difference between automotive wires and the ones used on these motors, which are solid copper core, I think.

If you replace the "irons" (the funny-shaped metal parts that the coil slides onto) make sure the new ones don't rub on the flywheel. Might be better to put the new coils on the old irons. Press fit. Carefully support the coil and tap them off and on with wood blocks--don't deform the irons.

Loudawg--you might want to start a new thread with your questions. Your mid-70's ignition will be different from what Chris has.
