yellowed fiberglass

Hey everyone,

I removed a panel from the side of my cockpit (wood covered in vinyl). I want the bare fiberglass to show instead of the vinyl. The normally white fiberglass underneath where the panel was has yellowed. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the yellowed fiberglass back to white? I tried bleach and it didn’t do anything.

I’m thinking of just wet sanding it, then buffing it…

All I can suggest is to try a small area and see if it works. Unfortunatly all too often, when it yellows it goes deep for whatever reason.

Normally it's what's exposed the sun that changes color (yellows), so the yellow tint under the panel may be the the original color. Gel coats normally yellow in the sun, but some yellow pigments don't hold up well, so the gel coat will get whiter as it ages and the yellow fades away. Sand and buff an area to see what happens.

That's what I'm going to do, sand it and buff it. I think I may evenutally paint the side of the cockpit anyway..so, it will potentially be repainted anyway.. we'll see how the sanding and buffing goes..
