Ok guys...I have a 1989 ski boat and I just bought a white truck on Saturday. I didn't realize the boat was this bad until I saw it next to the white truck. (I had a silver truck before) Anyway, the hull is in good shape and has a good shine to it, but it has the yellow tint to it that a lot of older boats do. I bought a rubbing compound/wax to try but wanted to check here before I do. What have ya'll used (and has worked ;)) to get rid of some of that yellow color. Thanks! :D

Re: yellowish shade on boat hull

Is the yellowish color pretty much water line and below, or all of the hull?

If it's water line and below, you may have similar to our situation. The water in our lake seems to stain the hull of our boat. At least once a year (when we pull the boat for the season), we go over it with hull cleaner (we use Star Brite brand from Wally World or Meijer -- there are other brands, too), and that cleans it up nicely. It's acidic and caustic, so be sure to wear rubber gloves and rinse well when you're done.

You *don't* want anything abrasive unless you want to have to repaint. Since ours is all gelcoat, I certainly don't want to abrade that.

Ok might try that. It's pretty much the whole boat. It really isn't that bad but when compared to a new white truck...it's pretty bad. And since I'm going to be pulling the boat with the truck, it will be noticable. :D

I have use toilet bowl cleaner with good results. Put the TB cleaner in a spray bottle make it easier to go on. Spray it on let it sit for one to 2 minutes, wipe off then rinse.

What type did you use? I know thats probably a dumb question, but there are a ton of TB cleaners out there. Thanks for the idea though! :D

Does it appear splotchy or as if the whole boat is just a different color? I apologize, I don't have any answers, but the new (old - 1998) boat that I bought appears yellowish. I had actually thought it was the tint of the boat.
Sorry I can't help, but I will try some of the suggestions!

It's not splotchy, and I know it's not the tint of the boat either. It had a silver pin stripe around the top that was coming off in places so I just peeled the whole stripe off and it's white under that and you can really see the difference.

I've read on the some other site where a mixture of 50% hydrogen peroxide 50% lysol toilet bowl cleaner works great. There were a lot of people that said they had really good results with that. Anyone one tried it and what were your results?? Thanks again.

Once you get it back to the right color, NEVER use a carnuba-based wax on it again. Instead, go to some of the newer synthetic waxes. Carnuba is yellow and naturally (along with the sun) yellows white paint over time. If you get a good UV protectant wax that is non-carnuba based it would help slow this process in the future.

As for "I've read on the some other site where a mixture of 50% hydrogen peroxide 50% lysol toilet bowl cleaner works great" - any body ever do this without blowing themselves up!!!! :D

If you don't get it white trying the different suggestions and I think the Starbrite Hull Cleaner will work best BTW. Email me or ask again and I will tell you what you have to do. Chuck's Fiberglass, Color Restore.

one more question....will the Starbrite stuff hurt any paint on the boat? Here is my boat (pic). I'm asking because of the navy stripe on the hull. The silver pin stripe you can see with the gaps in it has already been removed so I don't have to worry about hurting that....just wondering about the large blue stripe. Thanks

Also, will it damage any vinyl like the seats or anything like that on the inside?? (I'm new to owning a boat, just bought it last summer, so that's the reason for all the questions. :D)

Re: yellowish shade on boat hull

Take it to an auto body shop and have it professionally buffed. I used to do this type of work years and years ago and it works, I just did mine last year with great results.
The difference between cleaners and waxes of all sorts is that buffing actually removes a very small amount of the gelcoat exposing brand new gelcoat. This method also removes small scratches in the hull and really makes it look like new.
To maintain just get a non-static boat glaze and apply every few months or when you feel the surface start to lose it's smootheness. After each use on the lake use a vinegar and water solution in a spray bottle and wipe down the boat, this will keep water spots off quite well. I found my glaze at detailking.com along with all the other buffing supplies if you want to do it yourself. Be sure you know how to buff first, you could burn the coat but not as easily as burning the paint off of a car.

Hope that helps.

Maybe I just need to get rid of my Blizzard white (that is the actual color of it) truck and get the silver one back. :D Then I won't notice the yellow tint. haha:rolleyes:

Toilet bowl cleaner is usually sulfauric acid. Muratic acid and an old paint brush from the local hardware store works real good for me. Have not had a problem with it affecting paint and decals. Muratic acid is watered down hydracloric acid. Be careful when you mix chemicals such as bleach and amonia. Nice boat/ trailer combination by the way. Must be a fresh water rig. FRED

Thanks and you're correct on the fresh water. Not much salt in AR. ;) The toilet cleaner/HP didn't work at all. Did a spot and let it sit for a while....nothing. I'll give the starbrite stuff a try I guess. :D

Watch getting the Starbrite on any carpet or seats. It is Oxilic acid (not sure of the spelling) but its made to remove rust and mineral stains and is some pretty strong stuff.
I got a feeling you may have to live with the color unless you go the high speed buffer with the 3 step 3M products. Then no guarantee...

Good to know! I think if the starbrite stuff doesn't work, I may just live with it the color it is. The hull is in excellent condition so I'll just wax and let it shine (althought it will be have a slight yellow tint.) :D

You got close Gary - it's Oxalic. It does work well. Dilute concentrations are great for cleaning stains off of sails. You can buy it at the hardware store - it's sold as wood bleach - and mix your own...

Try something called Spray-9. They sell it at West Marine and probably at Boating World. Supposed to clean about anything on a boat.
