Yet another dual battery question

I have a perko switch and two starting batteries in my glastron now...The dealership just installed the switch and extra battery...Both batteries are 1000cca starting batteries...I want a to put a deep cycle in as well to run my future stereo upgrade as well as make it more "automatic" to charge the deep cycle...

If I keep the perko switch and the extra starting battery, add This with a deep cycle and wire the radio and tilt/trim to it, will it do what I want...Which is let me have a backup starting battery and a deep cycle I don't have to shut off that charges automatically when the boat runs?

Also as it is right now when I park the boat I have to lower my drive, turn off the perko switch and cover the boat...Then when I get it out I have to uncover the boat, turn on the switch, recover the boat, take it to my house and put the cover away...

Sounds stupid but If I could get the tilt trim wired strait to a deep cycle I could leave it powered all the time and it wouldn't matter...

Re: Yet another dual battery question

Is this an I/O or outboard powered boat? Three batteries on an outboard will very likely NOT stay topped off regardless what you do. It might even be questionable with a small I/O.

A battery disconnect or dual battery switch has an OFF position for a reason -- to disconnect all power to protect the batteries from accidental discharge. Therefore you installed the switch for a reason which was what??? If you wanted simplicity, then the ACR would have been the choice. For your future stereo upgrade the second battery the dealer just installed should have been a large deep cycle and you would not even have to think about the third battery since the switch OR ACR would protect the starting battery. The key with adding accessories is to plan ahead. Not after.

Re: Yet another dual battery question

The boat has a 5.0l volvo penta GXiC and the dealer added the perko switch and battery. I asked for a deep cycle and they told me they don't have a large enough deep cycle. I asked for a dual purpose and they added a starting battery.

I haven't done anything yet so technically I am planning ahead.

It seems like I could use the perko switch to select starting batteries and the bluesea part to seperate starting from an accessory battery. I would never run the boat with both switches set to both so the altenator wouldn't be charging 3 batteries at once.

Re: Yet another dual battery question

If you install the Blue Sea switch and ACR http://bluesea.com/category/1/productline/overview/329 , and isolate the house and starting systems, all you need is a starting battery for your engine, and either a dual purpose or even a couple of golf cart deep cycle batteries to handle all your systems. If you have a series 27 dual purpose battery, you could run your stereo all day without having to worry about charging, probably all weekend.

Re: Yet another dual battery question

I was posting earlier from work on my droid(which sucks to post from BTW)...The dealer was pretty aggressive when I said I wanted a dual purpose or a deep cycle...He said VP wants to see a 1000 cranking amp battery for a starting battery for warranty purposes...So I let them but it in...I think i am going to get a ACR and a blue top optima group 27 or 32 and set the perko to battrery 1 or 2 and have just the radio off the optima...I am freaked out that somehow on a camping trip I will get stuck with a dead battery and really want the insurance of a extra starting battery...This is PTSD from when my parents had us stuck or stranded with crappy vehicles when I was a kid...

Both batteries are 1000cca starting batteries.

You must have some giant batteries to get ones rated for 1,000-Amperes Cold Cranking. The largest battery I have ever seen was rated for 1,000-Amperes Marine Cranking (MCA), not Amperes Cold Cranking (CCA). A battery with 1,000-CCA rating would be very unusual. I would like to know more about your 1,000-CCA battery. Who makes it? What is the model information? Thanks.

Re: Yet another dual battery question

3.0GL and 4.3GL Models Only: Use a 12 volt battery having a
minimum rating of 360 Cold Cranking Amps at 0?F (-18?C), and a
115 minute reserve capacity rating at 80?F (27?C).
All Other Models: Use a 12 volt battery having a minimum rating of
650 Cold Cranking Amps at 0?F (-18? C), and a 165 minute reserve
capacity rating at 80?F (27? C).

The above is from a Volvo Penta 2007 installation manual, and the information is identical to the information in the manuals prior to your engine.
Now, ask yourself this, where did the dealer come up with the 1000 cca number, and why no other type battery but a starting battery can be used on your boat.

It was a salesman that told me this...I don't think I need to explain about salesmen on here(I think he pulled 1000 cranking amps out of his backside)...If I believed him I wouldn't be wanting to change around what he told me...

They installed a identical battery to the one that the boat came with and added a perko switch...I'm ok with the current battery setup...I just want something added that can be discharged and recharged and isolated and charged automatically for my radio and possibly my tilt/trim so I can keep the tilt/trim powered all the time...I can take out one of the starting batteries and replace it with a blue top optima...But I think the isolation the ACR provides(if I'm seeing it correctly) is worthwhile...

My boat is a 2010 model year fwiw...i'm sure the engine model is older...
