So , first of all , thanks for confirming my timing debacle question. I should have mentioned the fact that I'm probably going to replace the upper crank seal at this time ,also. This crankshaft has the points cam cast into the crank, kinda like a late '50's merc mk28a. Anyone know the correct SKF seal number for this application? I'm not sure if it's the same seal as the 35 hp with the removable points cam. I seriously doubt the seal puller will work on my seal..although I've been wrong before. Any thoughts? Thanks ,Greg

I would check seal integrity first.. squirt s bit of soapy water on top of sealing surface and pull it over (spark plugs out to make it easier to pull - won’t affect test). Upper crankcase under seal will have positive/negative alternating pressure trying to push/pull past sealing surface. Leak will be apparent. If soapy water isn’t disturbed, seal is doing its job. Good luck!

omc #321504 should be the correct upper crank seal but id certainly take the whole motor apart in an afternoon for a complete reseal. gasket sets are extremely cheap now too.
