Ok, I want both machines to share the same printer.
This a usb printer.
What are the steps to do this?
Both running windows.

Edit: They are both hooked up to router.

Start/Settings/Control Panel/Printers and Faxes

Highlight and right click subject printer. Select Sharing... You'll see the sharing options.

This is for XP. '98, '95, etc. probably a tad different nomenclature.

Like boatboy said, but I would make them a part of the same wrokgroup. To do this r/click my computer on the desktop, choose properties, computer name tab. On the bottom of that tab click change, then under workgroup, name it whatever you wish, like spinner. Do the same for both computers, giving them the samw workgroup name.

Re: Yet another puter question

grrrrrrrrrrr.
Did all that and the one machine see's the printer on the other machine, but no go.
When I try to send something to it to print, keep getting error message that the cables are not hooked up, etc.
I can print just find from the other machine.
grrrrrrrrrrr.
The other machine is 2000 pro and this one is XP.

If you r/click the printer, is there a security tab? Is the printer on the XP or 2000 machine? Can you try connecting the printer to the other computer to see if it works? You may need to install the driver for it on the machine it is not working on and this would accomplish this.

The printer is on the 2000 machine by USB port.
I do have the CD driver for it.

Re: Yet another puter question

Nomenclature is confusing, so I'm going to call the computer that has the physical attachment to the printer, a print server. The computer that needs to send a print job over the network, I'll call the workstation.

Whenever the workstation needs print services from the print server, the first thing that happens is the print server sends printer drivers to the workstation. This happens every time the workstation wants to print something. Now if the print server and the workstation are running 2 different flavors of Windows OS, the drivers from the print server may not be completely compatible with the workstation OS. That's when the printer drivers needed to be loaded directly on the workstation.

You should be able to download the driver from the manufacturer's website for the OS that you need it for.
As well, XP might already have the driver, it just needs to be installed, so be connecting the printer to the XP box, it may find the driver itself.

Ok, I would still hook it up to the other computer to see if it can print directly from it.

So if you share it from the XP pc, can the 2000 pc see it and print?
