Re: Yet another stuck steering tube! Make sure I'm thinking right, please.

I answered my own question about the tube, at least as it pertains to the one I have. It's the wrong one........CRAP!!!!

I got the motor off and hanging there. I told you guys that wasn't going to be hard to do >snickr>. Got the new steering cable in the mail today. Went and cut a pipe as instructed, cut the old cable, beat the old tube out and I'm ready to reassemble....and now I'm stuck. Did I say CRAP!!!!!! I guess I'll get on the horn tomorrow and see if God provides a miracle and somebody has one in stock. CRAP!!!!

I suppose it won't hurt to try and apply heat to this one now that it's not covered by the bracket but I got this feeling it's not going to budge. Maybe a machine shop can get it out?

I've got a feeling your fears are not allowing you to swing the hammer. The cable is cut so you've got nothing to lose. Giver what for. Carp works for me.

Oh I plan to take out my frustrations on it this morning. Got nothing to lose at this point.

This thread should scare every person on this forum into greasing their tube TODAY!!! Just got this thing red hot and it will NOT budge and that's with it in a vise and me swinging a 1lb hammer with all 240lbs of my might (well, technically 236lbs). It just laughed at me. This part is about $3.00 of steel that a dealer will charge $200.00 for the part and 4 hours of labor @$90.00/hr. to replace. So you know, boat was used a month ago with no major probs (probably stiff, but that's it). About $1.00 of good grease would've avoided this whole fiasco. Ok, off my soapbox now.

Hmmmm! Did I happen to tell you that I have one off an old Chrysler 60? It is 7/8 straight and threaded both ends. As you can see, it is the same length as the one in the Force 120 transom clamps.

It is threaded quite a bit more on the cable nut end and these threads will bear inside the transom clamp. BUT---If you are desperate-----

Well poppy ****, Frank. I went and paid out the nose and bought a new one. After a 1/2 day affair getting the clamp lined up and the other 1/2 fishing the new steering cable, I'm happy to report that project is finished! Joy was temporary, however and new prob & thread is about to be started. Just my luck.

Re: Yet another stuck steering tube! Make sure I'm thinking right, please.

For the summary; the 2nd cable I ordered is FINALLY installed. Actually, it was a cakewalk since I now have so much experience. Let the record show that the correct part # is SC13418 (Teleflex- 18' Rack) NOT 16foot, lol. The key to the cable removal is to scratch out a smidgeon at the stern opening, about 3/8" so the cable can both pull out and go back in flush with the motor. Otherwise it's gotta come off. Feed the new in from behind the wheel and make sure you go down the hole with the rod end (motor part) because the rack part will not fit through there. It's a 2 man job: person at the helm side needs to hold the cable up to get the nut through while pushing it back. My wife was able to be the "2nd man" so no biggie, really. Bolt the rack down to the helm w/4 bolts, hook the steering up at the motor and voila.....instant turnage. Like driving a Cadillac (out of the water, of course)

I think ordering the wrong 1 was a subconscious thingy because I'm exchanging it for a set of Nauticulus Smart Tabs......pretty smart, eh?
