Hey all. Bayliner Capri with 4.3L mercruiser I/O.
I am noticing a strong gas smell when I remove the boat cover. The boat runs fine and I can't find any signs of a gas leak. I do have a new cover, but would be surprised if that was the only reason for the strong gas smell. Any ideas would be appreciated...

a cover should not create a gas odor.check all hoses ,connections, and the sender.

You cannot mess around with that. I had the same problem last year - kept smelling fumes but nothing was wet and there was no gas in teh bilge. Turned out my sending unit was rusted through and it let just enough gas out on top of the tank to cause the fumes but no run into the bilge.

With that said - if your cover goes over the filler lid and/or the vent then it is possible that the cover is keeping the fumes from either of those in the boat.

Its normal to smell a little gas, i mean it is a gasoline engine with an open carb on top after all. All my boats have the same thing, but its light and quickly dissipates. If it is a strong smell that doesnt go away, check your fuel system thoroughly.

Find the Source, NOW! At Erie Pa. yesterday, a 32ft. boat was fueling at a marina. Went to start the boat and it exploded. Onboad 1 women killed, 4 others injured. (one being a 2yr. old). On the dock 2 injured. I heard some were flown to Pittsburgh burn units.

Ayuh,... This is just plain ole WRONG....

Smellin' Gas is usually the last thing before the boat goes BOOM...

Worse yet, Gas is heavier than air, it Don't dissipate, at ALL...
It builds in the bilge, til, well,... BOOM...

I figured it would be more than just a new cover. Thanks for all the ideas. The sender unit makes sense. My gas gauge has been a little flakey too. I will check further this weekend and update my findings.
