Re: Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of..............
Proof for proof, low-end booze tends to cause worse hangovers than high-end booze. This is because the distiller allows more "firsts" (a.k.a., "heads" or "foreshots") into the product in order to bulk it up. This is the volatile, low molecular weight, often poisonous (e.g., acetone, methanol) stuff that comes out of the still first. This is also why "bathtub" gin and poorly-made moonshine are so dangerous for you.
Type for type, booze based on molasses (i.e., rum) will be worst because the process for sugar refining puts so many volatile precursors (benzenes, terpenes, etc.) into the mash, both naturally and artificially; and the darker the worse. Boozes based on fruits/plants (brandies, grappa, tequila) are next worse, because they also have many of these precursors naturally; worst among these is tequila because it is usually less highly-distilled, and thus less watered-back before bottling. Next worse are grain-based (scotch, whiskey)--but this is a VERY broad spectrum of quality, of course; worst among these is bourbon, because it is the least highly-distilled, and is aged in new oak (more terpenes, etc.). The least offensive are the clear, highly-distilled boozes (vodka, good gin, well-made shine).
So there you have it. Vodka, good whiskey and good gin--and if you can get it, good shine--and no hangover. As far as I'm concerned, these are health foods.
