#1, I cannot find any reference to a yoke seal in the "Seloc" Mercruiser Stern Drive manual. Is there another name for it? Where is it located when looking at the exploded view.

#2: There seems to be a descrepancy on the rated hp in the "Seloc" Merc. Stern Drive Manual: 4.3L v6 shows a 262 C.I.D. having 185/205 HP.
The Merc. owners manual by "Brunswick Corp": 4.3 L v6 shows a 262 C.I.D. with 155 HP. What is the correct HP?

#1 You may be refering to the front seal in the top gearbox. Are we talking about a seal about 3" diameter?

#2 The 4.3L V6 was/is supplied in many variants. Firstly there was 3 generations of the block. The first had fluid engine mounts to absorb the harmonic vibrations created by a V6 engine with a 90 degree V. The second, known as "Gen II", had a balance shaft running counter to and at the same speed as the camshaft. The third, and current, is the "Gen +", different heads and intake manifold and a single (serpentine) 'fan' belt. Not withstanding the above, it also appeared with 3 different fuel systems. One was a 2bbl Mercarb, another with a 4bbl carb, early were a Rochester Quadajet and later with a Weber. And finally throttle body fuel injection (TBI).

The confused is enhanced by the fact that the earlier motors were rated by the horsepower at the crankshaft and later were rated by horsepower at the prop shaft.

In summary:

"Gen I" 2bbl (4.3L)- 185hp at the crank
"Gen I" 4bbl (4.3LX)- 205hp at the crank
"Gen II" 2bbl (4.3L)- 155hp at the prop
"Gen II" 4bbl (4.3LX)- 180hp at the prop
"Gen +" 2bbl (4.3L)- 190hp at the prop
"Gen +" 4bbl (4.3LX) -210 hp at the prop
"Gen +" EFI (4.3LXH)- 220hp at the prop

If I've missed anything someone else will fill it in.

Chris...........

Ty,

If you have the same manual as I have, go to page 10-11 and refer to section 10-8 "Upper Gear Housing Disassembling" and also section 10-9 to get to the seal.

You don't need to remove the entire gear assembly, just the retainer using the special wrench. Mine slid out quite easily, just be sure to keep track of any shims for re-assembly.

A picture of the seal is shown on page 10-17. It is pressed into the carrier assembly. I also replaced the o-ring on mine.

Good Luck!

i had no idea how many varients there are! Anyway i have a 1990 4.3l v6 w/ alpha one drive 2bbl carb serial # od381558 on engine. So i believe it is probably the Gen. II w/ 155 at the prop. It does not sound as good as 185HP at the crank but is that the same thing?

Hi tystick,

Your engine is the Gen I, 1990. The Gen II started late 1992, but the balance shafts didn't appear in them until 1993.

Chris..........

Re: Yoke seal & misc. Merc. HP spec .

is the crank shaft rating and the prop shaft rating on the gen 1 @ 185 and 155 respectively? That would explain why the owners manual has the prop shaft rating. Therefore I would be correct in stating the 185 hp spec. as more accurate with todays rating standards.

Most engine packages today are stated by the propshaft horsepower. Therefore the more accurate rating is the 155hp, sorry!

Chris..............
