I'm not sure if it has been discussed before as I have been gone, But this is a HUGE ship!!!

http://www.jtashipphoto.dk/jtashipphoto.dk 1/Emma Maersk/emma_maersk.htm

Now I know how Wal Mart gets all its stuff from China.

World's Largest Cargo Ship. Get a load of this ship! 15,000 containers and
a 207' beam !!!!!! And look at the crew size for a ship longer than a US
aircraft carrier which has a complement of 5,000 men and officers.

Think it's big enough? Notice that 207' beam means it was NOT designed for
the Panama or Suez canal. It is strictly transpacific. Check out the
"cruise speed". 31 knots means the goods arrive 4 days before the typical
container ship (18-20 knots) on a China-to-California run. So this
behemoth is hugely competitive carrying perishable goods.

This ship was built in three, perhaps as many as five sections. The
sections floated together and then welded.
The ship is named Emma Maersk.
The command bridge is higher than a 10 store building and has 11 crane rigs
that can operate simultaneously.
Additional info:
Country of origin - Denmark
Length - 1,302 ft
Width - 207 ft
Net cargo - 123,200 tons
Engine - 14 in-line cylinders diesel engine (110,000 BHP) Cruise Speed - 31
knots, Cargo capacity - 15,000 TEU (1 TEU = 20 ft3 container)

Crew - 13 people

First Trip - Sept. 08, 2006

Construction cost - US $145,000,000+

Man, that is impressive. Looked to me like they were trying to drag it off of whatever it was sitting on in the water. The rutter and top of the prop is exposed in some of those gallery pics. What a beast.

Impressive.

I'm sure it's unloaded. At sea, I'm sure they have ballast tanks built in to make it stable in the water even when unloaded, and that would lower it in the water so that the prop and rudder would be underwater.

That is of course why ocean freight is a relatively cheap way to transport large volumes of anything.

We used to sell wood chips from a mill in Port Angeles, Wa, to mills anywhere from Pt Townsend, Wa., 60 miles away, to Japan. It was cheaper per unit to ship them to Japan than it was to Pt Townsend

Thats a big one, alright. I wonder if it will be able to handle those 100+ ft high rogue waves that tend to sink regular ships?

Awesome pics LubeDude!

I happen to know the US Operations Manager for those engines. I had dinner at his house last month. He and I used to work together where I am now. Have sorta considered joining them for West Coast sales . . . It is amazing, but diesel engines are still the most efficient power source there is up to this level of power. Single screw is also for efficiency. I believe that the cutoff is around 150,000 bhp before gas fired boilers and steam turbines cross over. Man, that Rudy Diesel was one Bad Arse Mo Fo :D

BTW, did you see how smoky it was?

That is one fine ship.
Looks like they are trying to get it to deeper water before they take on ballast.

I've been close to a bunch of container ships in Long Beach here. It doesn't look higher than a regular empty one to me, their props all show like that.

Re: You have to see this!

Modern Marvels did a story on the engine, I believe the rod's are 12 or 15 feet long, they have a door at the main's on each cylinder where they do walk in service....... and if i remeber right the pistons' are 3 or 4 feet wide... :D they take a over head crane to install a piston and rod it was something to watch

Re: You have to see this!

I have a friend that is a tug boat mechanic,he says that some of the ocean going tugs you can crawl thru the cylinders, and you use a crane to replace the power pak, which is the cylinder, piston, wrist pin, and they (3) tech's togeather torque it with a 10 foot gear reducted torque wrench..
a 3-4 foot piston?? 12-15 foot rods?? that has to be some serious h.p. and torque..that one is huge, its one I would like to see..:).:)

Re: You have to see this!

Does anybody know where I can get a trolling motor for that boat? :D

Under full load and full speed, I wonder how many miles out from port she have to back way off the throttle or shutdown so she can stop.
