Ok, I have a 99 johnson 90Hp.<br /><br />When i bought the engine it had a clicking sound comming from the engine.<br />So I had it checked by omc mechanic here and they found that one op the pistons had seized.( they said it was due to bad oil being used by previous owner )<br />Luckely cilinders were still ok.<br />Replaced piston and all piston rings on other pistons too, together with main bearing.<br />paid 2000$ to get this done.<br /><br />They said they did a test run and all was fine.<br />Now 2 weeks ago I took the boat out for the first time and it was hard to start. ( Started better when the piston was seized )<br />Engine runs fine but when I down throtle from over 3000 rpm there was a weird noise comming from the engine ( like a ratched in the engine )<br />If I stayed below 3000rpm no noise....<br /><br />So I took it back to the shop, they said that it probably is he prop.<br /><br />Now they called and said that the vro pump was bad and caused the engine to misfire and die. they replaced the vro and now it starts to overheat so they are going to replace the thermostats. (they are bad, waterpup was just replaced )<br />so this is going to cost me another 1300$ on labor and parts. ( vro pump alone costs 700$ labor is 65$/hour)<br /><br />Does this sound right ? problem and cause....<br />or am I getting ripped out here<br /><br />Thanks

What I can tell you is that here in the states the pump cost is about $283. Don't know what the exchange difference is there in Belgium. Unless the pump is really off to Mars...don't see it causing misfire. Usually ignition related.<br /><br />In the original problem, "they" said a piston had seized....were they talking about the rings or the piston. If the piston seized to the cylinder wall, the engine wouldn't crank over. <br /><br />The ratcheting noise....long shot....miss adjusted shift cable or shift rod. The lobes of the forward gear and clutch dog may be disengaging when coming off power......just a shot.<br /><br />Hate to say this about another dealership, even across the pond, but I'd get another opinion.

Yeah, and the bizzelflitz undercut the cam bearing causing a fire in the combustion chamber.<br /><br />Try another dealer, Max.<br /><br />Your dealer just might be honest, but his descriptions of causes sound very contrived and unrelated to your symptoms. I don't believe him.

Ok thank for the reply .<br /><br />The piston was seized in the engine. I looked at it myself there were scars in the piston side. <br />The engine ran great on mufs it just had a ticking noise comming from it that was going up and down with the rpm. I Just let it run twice on mufs and took it to the shop to see what the noise was.... piston seized... there was alot of oil gunk inside the engine, mechanic told me previous owner used bad oil therefor seized piston.<br />While the engine was open they cleaned everything, honed the cilinders, put 1 new piston in it , replaced all new piston rings and new top bearing.<br /><br />When I took the boat out I had a hard time starting it but when it ran it ran good ( I was able to run at 4500 - 5000 rpm without any problem ), only when I powered down there was a ticking sound comming from the engine ( only from above 3000 rpm ) and the rest you know ....<br /><br /><br />I am lost here since this is a very well known shop and normaly very good ? ?<br /><br /><br />Now you mention it they did replace the LINK,SHIFT LEVER maybe he has to look at this ...<br /><br /><br />One thing is for sure I will never buy things like this again from ebay

You need to get the rpm up at WOT. At least 5500rpm. May need a prop change to get it. But do get the rpm up.

I have been a mechanic for a good long time. I still can't look at burn't oil, and say it was bad. What was Mark Twain's response when he said he did'nt know? Something about answering promply!

Stingray, I'm having a problem with the seized piston. If a piston is siezed, it's essentially stuck in the cylinder - it don't move! At a minimum, you were not firing on all cylinders; for the engine to even turn over, the connecting rod had to be disconnected/broken, and it's hard to believe the piston was scored but not the cylinder bore. Something ain't right here; sounds as if your mechanic may be less than honest ...
