Well, the information I was given here was spot on - the motor idles fine and can get higer rpm in neutral but once in gear it bogs down - was told to check spark...no spark in upper wire (interestingly when doing a google search this was the most common one to go) - I have good spark on other cylinder so assume points ok (will clean and gap anyway) - I think the most likely culprit is one of the coils - I guess I need to remove the flywheel to get to this? Nothing odd like reverse thread or anything on this? I read they are available at NAPA - anyone have a part number and/or is the coil on the newer fisherman the same as for this one?

Thank you,

Lee

OMC universal coil, used on most singles & twins from about 1952 to the early 1980s, is Sierra (NAPA) part number 18-5181. OEM part number is 582995.

Thank you - is there a trick to removing the bolt on the top of the flywheel? Does not seem to be anywhere to anchor the flywheel itself from turning.

Either use a flywheel strap or just get a strong buddy to grip the flywheel tightly while you tap your wrench to loosen it up. Then you'll need a harmonic balancer puller with three 1/4-20 grade 8 bolts threaded into the three holes in the top of the flywheel. Lots of posts here on doing the ignition on those old Johnrudes.

Hi Britcheflee. Check out this pics in this link. It will show you how to remove the flywheel. For a motor that small, a strap whrench is handy for holding the flywheel when using the puller, or you can use a screwdriver like they do in the link. You may as well replace the s'plug wires whiel you're at it. No sense keeping crusty old wires. You can get it for about $3 a foot from NAPA or Carquest. 8-10 ft. should be plenty for that little motor. You'll be amazed at the difference they make. Hope it helps. Keep us posted.

Coils, points, and condensers are all available right here at iboats.

You need a torque wrench and a way to hold the flywheel to put that nut back on to 40-45 foot pounds. Ignoring that is one of the most common reasons motors are trashed.

DO NOT use a puller that grabs the outer diameter of the flywheel---it WILL destroy it. Use a puller that utilizes the 3 center holes.
