You will never guess what product removed creosote,Im stunned!!

I bumped a creosote cover piling with my swim platform.Got a half dollar sized tar spot on the corner of my platform.I tried wax, compound,mineral spirits, magic eraser and carb cleaner.Took a little off but not much. Had a can of OFF bug repellant in garage so what the heck gave it a try.CAME RIGHT OFF WITH NO EFFORT. And I have been wearing this stuff for years.Holy mackerel,Im stunned.Charlie

In addition to Deet, a quick search reveals a partial list of ingredients as. . .

1. Propane
2. Butane
3. Ethanol
4. Isobutane
5. Aminomethyl Propanol

Not sure which one(s) would be performing the solvent magic.

And it certainly was magic.Creosote Came off instantly.Charlie

Likely the same reason it clears up headlights is the same reason it worked for creosote. It was explained to me that the deet creates a reaction and it is what pulls the imperfections off

I know the stuff took all the Lettering off the buttons on one of my DSLRs. Makes it interesting when trying to operate that Camera

I am fairly convinced that bug spray is pretty much a universal solvent. I had a non-aerosol bottle leak in the bottom of my golf bag and it start dissolving the grips on my clubs. I had to regrip all of them.
