On my johnson 1973 135 hp the coils heated up due to a bad rectifier and they swelled up and were destroyed. I looked at my stator and I noticed that the coils are only held on by a spring clip. So then i asked around and no one only sold the coils, they said i had to buy a new stator. ya right, Im not paying $379 for a stator.

A couple days later i took my trash up to the dump and some guy was throwing away two evenrude late 80's 40 hp outboard engines. I knew they were two cylnder so i thought if there was one coild chargine the power pack for two cylenders. One my 135 there were 2 coils for 4 cylenders.

Just my mabye i could take the coils off the 40's and slap em on my 135 stator.

There was one problem!

The out put from the 40 hp coils was 50 volts less that (required) to power the power pack.

I think ill chance it

sure enough my little 14 foot raceing boat now runs and will see the water agian this summer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my queston is do any of you guys think that I missed something or something will go wrong with my creation?

Not really, but you should be aware that most of the 1973 systems got replaced a long time ago for the new stators which were all potted.

The good news is that the salvage yards have plenty of the newer ones. Call around and check.

I have that exact same motor for parts... it has one cylinder with low compression but runs and if you feed fuel into that one cylinder it flys.

if anyone has a rectifier for ill buy no problem. If i dont get a new rectifier then the same thing wil happen agian.

You can always run the motor without a rectifier. You would have to recharge your battery from time to time. The unregulated rectifiers are cheap enough, why take a risk on a used one?

it turns out that the red lead on the rectifier (the one that sends the juice to the batter) was not hooked up. could that make the alternator coils heat up

the lead wasn't hooked up because the old owner used the amp gauge as a loop from rectifier to battery.

Charging circuit/rectifier is virtually independent of the ignition system UNLESS someone fries the rectifier and fuses the wiring within it. At that point the full 12 volt charge from the battery can enter the ignition sytem through the fused wiring and destroy just about anything in the ignition system.

someone told me that since the rectifier was not hooked up all the way the alternating coils would heat up. since the two coils that charge the power pack are right next to the alternator coils, mayble the two charging coils swelled up because of that and got smeard all over the flywheel. Do you think that could of happened of what else could of made the two coils swell?

If you don't know why the battery wire was disconnected on the rectifier, you should disconnect all of the rectifiers wires and test it.

it was disconnected because the old owner used the amp gauge to loop it to the battery. I didn't have the gauge hooked up so. no connection.
