Re: Your boat isn?t anything special..

Sounds like jealousy or insecurity....My boat would likely fit in the same category according to her...It is 25 years old and a bit dated looking, but has near mint interior and great exterior. I'm very proud of it because of the way it has been maintained and the excellent service it has given me. The biggest repair I have made on it in the 14 years I have had it is a shift cable. It gives me a warm and fuzzy feeilng everytime I use it because it is so old, but still so good....I usually feel sorry for the snobs at the dock with a shiny, new boat and most likely a fat payment book to go with it....Of course, I guess they also look down on my truck when I pull it outta the water with a 16 year old Toyota.:D

Amen sir.

Re: Your boat isn?t anything special..

I have overheard some people wonder why I put the time and effort into rebuilding my boat. ?the idiot?. Of course, they are still paying for their new boats.

She does what I want it to do and when a couple of you?ll compliment me on the work, It makes my day.

Well now there's nothing wrong with payments on a boat. I personally wouldn't ever pay them but there's something to be said for spending time on the water instead of time working on it. Sometimes it boils down to the difference an extra 30k or 500/month or whatever it is sitting unused in your account versus being able to enjoy the benefits the money can bring. Also, when your season is less than 4 months like it is here in MN, I rather spend the time on the water if I had the option. I also don't think people realize we like making old things new again as a hobby not just because it's all we can afford.

Well it depends on whether you look at the glass half empty or half full.

Some would say only 4 months of boating means 8 months of fixing it up. There are many people who build airplanes and never fly them, they love to build. I would venture to guess that most people who have 30g's "unused" in an account aren't going to put forth the effort to fix up an old boat, what's the point? Part of fixing up an old boat is the savings from buying a new one. And the reward of your labor.

There isn't much labor involved in signing on the dotted line.

just the labor that got the extra 30k into the account to begin with.

The witch does not know that there are 2 types of boaters, those who just own a boat and ride in it and the boat enthusiast who enjoy the details and mechanics and restoration and have taken time to gain the knowledge which gives them a special satisfaction.

Re: Your boat isn?t anything special..

I had a friend?s wife make the following comment?

?You guys are awful proud of your boat, but it isn?t anything special to be proud of.?

Aside from the snobby way she said it she missed a few points.

Sure as a Sunbird she will not be a collector?s item anytime soon or ever. But she is something to my family.

-She is paid for

-It has brought our family together in so many ways, from working on it to trips in it. It has done a ton for our kids, my 2 and 3 year old come out to work, my 16 year does too and it is being used to teach her responsibility and seamanship, before she drives a car.

-It has given birth to other opportunities that our family is exploring in owning our own business.

So to someone else, it may not be anything; but to us BOFUS is a member of the family.

My friends wife doesn?t get that we went with something that we knew we could sell easily if our younger children didn?t enjoy being on the water.

Oh well some people just don?t get it.

Did you tell her what you told us?

Re: Your boat isn?t anything special..

I am curious as to what kind of boat she has..

I have a cabin on a river, a 1992 25' pontoon boat with a '89 90 Hp Nissan, and a 1961 Alumacraft with a 1976 9.8 HP.

I talk a lot about it, but compared to the others in my social circles, it looks like a pile of crap.. But

I don't cry when I hit the dock or if it rains and I don't get it covered or I don't freak when my kids pull in a huge catfish and get all of its slime all over the carpet. I have sunk my fishing boat three times with the same motor on it due to unexpected rains. I know I can have it running within 30 minutes of pulling it out of the water. Try that with your fncy four stroke.

If I could wait to do this stuff until I could afford the new stuff, my kids would be grown and the memories would be gone. Half of the people you see driving those fancy boats around are probably overcommitted and looks are important.

Re: Your boat isn?t anything special..

ok letme start with this is our first boat and she was very ugly when i picked itup . it is a 1987 bayliner 1900 with a 1985 evinrude 120hp v4 on her .i tree branch fell on her while the old owner was tryingto redo her he had stripped the paint from the bottem with a ravor blade sou knowthemessthat made the tree took out the windows andput a 6 inch crack across the top rail but the seats are still useable for awhile like they are andmost of the floor is rock hard . the floor in the cuddy is softer but it is only 18 x 28 inches and the floor under the rear most seats where the battery sit and other storage goes is a little soft .been workingmybutt off but we gotit in the water 5 times now the first time didn't go well at all it started then died and that was it had to walk it back to the trailer the next time we made it away fromthe docks but not tofar and died ( has i nice guy tow me back in to the dock) then we made it out had toplay with it to get it going cuz ofthe idlenot wantingto work right but ran great in open water . then we started to have fun with it took the kids tubing and they had a blast we all laughed it was a good day andi am hoping itis just the first of many . nottobad for aold boat and motor that i only paid 450 dollars for. and for the other guy that said about bikers and the way they are to eacj other i am one of them too i have owned and road for over 20 years i stared then with old stuff cuz it was all i could buy and nowi have a 2002 softail that is truely one of akind . and i am sure with the wifeandkids lovingthis too that someday we will have a boat that i can say that same thing about ....... thank for lettingus join your family of boaters

Re: Your boat isn?t anything special..

i was just gettng ready to make a post sort of like this one.. i bought my 84 ebbtide for 3grand put about 1000 in it with personal touches and tuning it up.. my buddy bought a 06 nitro he didnt say how much he paid for it but it was ALOT..its a nice looking boat.. and he was telling everyone that i should have bought a nicer boat becouse mine looked like crap (hes rich... im a shade tree mech)...

next weekend we both pulled into a sand bar ... every hour or so i kept seeing him walk up to his boat and he would kick his bildge pump on and i asked him why.. the back were the motor mounts on it all cracked up and leaks water bad.. i told him to get rid of it quick.. and now he said the guy he bought it off of said it was supposed to do that... ive had boats my whole life and he knows that and this is his first boat... he still tells everyone my boat is junk and his is WAY better... i just laugh anymore and im pretty sure all the people that was around would rather ride in my boat than his... just thought i would share that... i would rather have a junky looking paid for boat than having another payment and worrying about a bill .... oh well i love my ebbtide:D

Yup. Says more about her than your boat.

These people make it easy though. I wish more people would open their mouths and tell me straight out what is wrong with them. Would make life so much easier.

Some people are just to materialistic. They allways have to keep up with the Jones's. She sounds full of herself. As long as your out there enjoying what you love, dont let people like her ruin your day. My boat isnt the best newest jem either, but I brought it back to life, and spend my time and $ to get out there. I can go buy the big expensive boat, but for what? I run it down a shallow river and dont get my panties in a bunch when it bumps into something or gets dirty. Its just a toy to me. If it breaks, I fix it. ;)

Re: Your boat isn?t anything special..

Some people are just that way RED, sorry. I would not take offense to it, just consider the source and not let her on the boat.

But some of you guys missed a type of boater/boat owner...ME.:D

I never had a problem working on my boat to keep her on the water, never had a problem with what people thought of my boat. It was mine and it got me from point A to point B and back to point A...most of the time.

We love boating and being on the water. We wanted a new boat that was ours. Meaning we went, looked, and were the first and only owners. We saved for seven years, all the while still keeping that ol' '87 18' Rinker floating and running. We went without a lot of things to put ourselves in the position to be able to buy a new boat. When the day came we could shop for our new boat, we did. When the day came to pick her up, we did. And it was a great day for us and all of the sacrifice was made worth it and rewarded ten fold.

I do not have a payment book, I do not snub any boat or boat owner on the water for what type of boat he has or the condition. I gladly help people with their boats when they are in need. I know I needed help more than once, I am glad to repay the favors I got. And I appreciate older boats that are taken care of or restored. I even appreciate anyones desire to be on the water no matter what the boat or payment or not.

So for those of you that think people with a shiny new boat have a payment book, or a materialistic attitude, or look down on lesser boats...well, you can probably guess what I am wanting to say.

Don't judge a owner by his boat. Just think about that the next time you see a new boat backing down the ramp.
