So for those of you that think people with a shiny new boat have a payment book, or a materialistic attitude, or look down on lesser boats...well, you can probably guess what I am wanting to say.

Please dont take my post as a attack to newer or high dollar boat owners. To each his own on what we buy. I have zero problem w/ someone who buys a new boat or makes payments. I was just saying how "some" boat owners/people act towards others. There is alot of snobs in this world.

You know I think we are all boaters, weather we fix it ourselves our hire out the work. Weather it is new or a classic.

Some folks (like the lady in the message) just miss the point of being happy and content in life with what you have and what makes you happy.

Happiness does not come with a price, certain look or size; it comes from loving what you do and who you are doing it with.

?You guys are awful proud of your boat, but it isn?t anything special to be proud of.?

Translation:

I am vicariously living my life through you.

YES! I was finally able to use vicariously in a sentence! My .02

You can see where I could have taken it that way though, do you not?

I can and do understand where you are coming from. There are, and I know and I also understand what you are saying, there are "snobs" amongst us. I see and deal with them on almost a daily basis:eek:.

Also, it was not only you, but other "chimes" on the perceived idea of newer boats and their owners.

So to you, xtreme, I say thank you and understand:redface:. To RED_BOFUS, sorry for "voicing" my opinion that is off the topic of your post. I have no intention of hijacking your thread. I just read this mind set too often.:(

I agree, too many people in this life miss what the point is.....family togetherness and happiness. Forest Gump might have said it best.......

Hmmm i would have taken a moment to carefully reflect on her comment....I then would have looked at her with a great deal of concern and asked just which one was not that special...With a disbeliving look in my eye i would have told how many hours and i had put into the boat...then a embarssing grin and say not to mention the money...

Then take the time to display the emotional connection to them...Just the right color...the swoopy lines and the distinctive charater each one had..that sexy full bimini top... and the hours of fullfillment and pleasure they have given me..

At that point i would again turn and look her with the amazement a young child has in there eyes....You know the sparkle im talking about....and utter the words......." And they never complain" Whats not to luv...;)

Re: Your boat isn?t anything special..

I doubt she meant any insult by it. Mostly, women (mostly) just do not understand some male dominated hobbies. The females in my family (mom and older sister) constantly tell me I'm stupid for buying my old beat up craigs list jet skis. They see me working on it trying to rebuild it and make fun of me for wasting my time and money. Even some friends told me to just list it on craigslist as a part ski and cut my losses. They don't understand that this is why I got my degree in mechanical engineering. I like projects...I like solving problems and I like doing things myself.

And more importantly, when they are fixed and running great...I get to say.."I wish you could use them...but you know craigs list jet skis...they probably won't run whenever you want to take it out". :)

No big deal buddy, it is discussion and it often takes you in direction you did not think it would.

Re: Your boat isn?t anything special..

i am new to boating and so fari found very niceboaters willingto help you out andthen the snobs that areonly there for themselves. the second time we tried to take her her she died about 40 feet from the ramp, i am disabled with very little use of my left leg and had trouble tryingto get it back in , a few people just looked at me as they loaded in the water and motored off but one man rushed to get his little 9.9 jon boat in the water to take a line and get me over to the dock to where my wife was waiting to help . the last time we were out a guy was out just outsidethe nowake zone with his hood up and just feet hanging out from under people just went on by not checking on him i started to rush to get out to check on him when an older man in a brand new boat stop to check on him after he seen him take him shirt off and started to get in the water . so i am very happy to see some very nice people out there to help. i have been a biker all my life and helping follow bikers is part of the life and i hope to see moreof this with the boater life aswell.

thanks for letting me share

Re: Your boat isn?t anything special..

Well now there's nothing wrong with payments on a boat. I personally wouldn't ever pay them but there's something to be said for spending time on the water instead of time working on it. Sometimes it boils down to the difference an extra 30k or 500/month or whatever it is sitting unused in your account versus being able to enjoy the benefits the money can bring. Also, when your season is less than 4 months like it is here in MN, I rather spend the time on the water if I had the option. I also don't think people realize we like making old things new again as a hobby not just because it's all we can afford.

Payments:

Here's what I did: I bought the boat new in 1988, made payments for 3 years, and still have it. It's been a great joy to our family and ran great on Sunday.

I have done that with cars, as well, bought new, kept them for a long, long time. Handed them down to the children when they needed vehicles. I've never traded one in.

I do the maintenance myself on the boat and cars, as I'm sure many of the great folks on iboats forums do. :D

I don't pay much attention to what people say anymore. Especially snobby materialistic types who think their s*** don't stink. I don't try and impress anybody. I like piece of mind more than over extending myself. Lots of bankrupt people out there who got into the materialistic game

Your boat is special... Look at those smiles in your pictures.. That's special.

My boat is special to me.. I got a great deal on it.. When I am working under my carport on it.. Have to get down and work under the dash.. I look down after I get up and see my sweat on the ski locker.. That is special.. When I went out last Sunday and my boat ran as good or better than the $20k machines.:p. It's special.. I can do a lot of repairs on my boat for $19000..

The rich are different.. Tell her that money doesn't make her special.. It sure didn't buy her any class!

I was having a really BAD day last sat. and my Lady knew it. Nothing going right people up my butt. You all know what I mean, we`ve all had them. She looked at me and said" Lets take the boat out" An hour later, feet kicked up watching the world go by and none of it mattered. Yeh my boat might be a little old and dingy but its mine and it makes us happy and thats all that matters.

Re: Your boat isn?t anything special..

red and slim- you have to forgive me i have only been married for 5 months and things i would say when i was single still come flying out of my mouth. lol. my wife and i are both forty and in our first marriage. i dont know why the woman was single as long as she was, she is a very good woman and the love of my life. i traded my motorcycle for a boat cause she likes the water, but i like the asphalt. but in pleasing her i pleased myself.

Re: Your boat isn?t anything special..

A buddy of mine gave me a 84 Bayliner. It didn't run and needed an interior. My sons and I got her running and re did the interior. We have put 30 hours on the boat since July. It was a great experience working with my sons on that project. I would not have experienced that had we bought a new boat. No offense to new boat owners; but I agree with others about it being something special when restoring it yourself.
