I'm looking at a boat that has a 1983 50hp Evinrude motor on it. I'm asking for any opinion good or bad about this motor. I have a 1957 Evinrude that runs great. Did the motor change in dependability on newer models?

I had an '83' Johnson 50. Same thing.

It was not a powerhouse, but did well on a light hull. It ran great-smooth, dependable.

I have a 1975-50 now that tuns just as nice.

Replace the water pump and tune 'r' up and you'll have a little sweetheart.

Tips:

1. Use Champion plugs only, gap to 040".

2. Run some Sea Foam (NAPA) through it.

3. Don't lug it. Prop it to run at least 5500 at wide open.

I have the tel model and love it. Only tough thing to get to is the shift lever bolt. Takes a little fineggeling if I spelled it right. Starts right up, idles smooth and have a top end of 32mph with gps and two guys in my 14.5ft fiberglass.
