I know this might be a volatile thread and I hope it doesn't turn out to be that way.

First off, I want to start out that I don't condone speeding, and heck I made a thread on some forum, maybe this one, about how I was told by someone that I can't drive (because I was going so slow presumably. The thread was removed by the mods). So I don't drive fast and that's not why I have one.

My truck doesn't have cruise control. I've taken it on road trips and after a while, your foots cramps up and your speed starts to wander a bit. I found myself, in a 70mph zone, going anywhere from 61 to 82, all without conscientiously doing it (and this over a several hour period). While you could say that I'm doing it to avoid a ticket, I say that I am doing it to make me more aware of my speed in case I'm zoning out while driving, that thing will kick me in the tail and warn me of possible radar zones ahead. I am fully aware of the detector not being able to warn me really of being hit with a laser gun in time to help, and I can't change that. Louisiana doesn't really use laser to my knowledge, I have yet to get hit by a laser in our state.

I've never been pulled over for speeding and I can't really say in 12 years of having one (before someone stole it out of my truck) that it saved me from a ticket but I can say that it woke me up and got me to look down and make sure everything was ok. I think its fun to see if you can find the smokey after it goes off.

To those who say they are useless because they pick up automatic doors and have false alarms, they have largely eliminated that by letting you be able to completely disable the popular bands that these doors operate on. My new one (a 3 year old refurb) actually shows you a digital readout of battery voltage while you're driving. It's pretty darn handy too. It will give you a voice alert if your battery voltage drops while you're driving (your alternator goes out) in addition to the voice alerts for the different radars. It will also alert you to emergency vehicles in the area if those vehicles are carrying the safety alert radio system.

I'm curious to know what people think about them. I'm going to post a poll and see how this does.

I think they are well worth the money if you travel a lot. I also believe you have to know how to drive with the radar detector for it to be usefull. With the new laser radar it has made it a little trickey to get enough warning however using the radar with some simple rules of driving you can still keep from getting cought.

I have had a few different brands over the years however now I will only use use the Valentine One. Compared to all the others I have used it is the best hands down.

I feel you can drive fast and still drive safe. It all depends on the road and traffic conditions and what your driving experience is.

Re: Your views on radar detectors....

Im 26? Years old. Friends the same age. They do 85+ and I hate driving with them. They hate driving with me because I go about 65. In the 75 zones I'll do about 73.

I get crap for it all the time. I support your safe driving!

My friend the idiot driver, doing 85 on the freeway (traffic was going about 70) lost control and spun around (180) then hit the center divider.
Now we are facing traffic head-on, and get hit my a suburban (head on, with about 2 seconds of breaking before the impact)

I walked away and now never speed or do something stupid.

And I STILL get pulled over for speeding
"you were going a little fast"
"Like hell I was"
"Are YOu CAlliNG me a LIAR!?!?!"
...never gotten a ticket though.

People, me included, use them to break the law.

I like to drive about 7 over. Just a couple of mph faster than the traffic. It's paid for itself several times over.

I see as much a problem with excessive speed as I do with driving slow. Your not in congruence with the traffic. If everybody is doing 75, or close to it, there usually isn't a problem. You stick one moron in there that wants to drive 95 or 55, same difference, you have a problem.

YOU may be able to drive safe doing 100 mph on the interstate, it's the way the rest of the people on the road react to it that makes it dangerous.

I agree 100% with that!! I have driven 100+ many times however it was mostly out west and there was 0 traffic. Road conditions were good and no traffic for miles, was like a sunday drive.

Like I said I think you can drive fast and safe IF the conditions are right. Driving fast weaving through traffic is NOT safe. Driving 50 on the fast lane on a interstate, also not safe.

What amazes me is how people do not adjust to the weather/road conditions. We get snow or ice on the ground and people think they have to keep driving the speed limit.

My car at 90, No way in hell would I call that safe. the old clunkers suspension is pretty worn.

California drivers -

Stop and go traffic on a bright sunny day
Pouring rain - 80mph

Re: Your views on radar detectors....

When I owned one, I used it to speed. I don't speed intentionally any more, so if I were to own one today, it would be to remind me to slow down, if I unintentionally wandered above the speed limit.

One use that I would really like one for, is related to the proliferation radar/camera devices being mounted on posts, in SUVs and in trailers. There is a town near me that uses them and they are a pain, because the way that they use them, is obviously for generation of revenue. In particular they tend to put them on roads with artificially low speed limits, right at the border of the town. This is done so people who are driving on a road with a speed limit that is normal for the conditions present, get nailed as they drive into the town that I am speaking of, where the limit drops by 10 mph.

These things annoy the heck out of me, because of the dishonesty involved and a radar detector would serve as a good reminder to slow down.

Re: Your views on radar detectors....

I bought mine, Beltronics 955, several years ago in preparation for a 2 week motorcycle trip. I didn't want to get any tickets, of course, but really was going it use it as a reminder as I was approaching towns. Most of my miles were on backroads, and small towns and slower speed limits were frequent. They work well that way if there is enough traffic on the road for you to get a read off traffic ahead of you. It did its job, and now I don't travel without one.

I've only gotten one ticket since I bought mine. About a month ago we were on vacation and I came back from a couple states north to pick up my boat. I was in a hurry and the traffic was light. There wasn't anyone ahead of me that I could see and wasn't meeting any traffic either. I knew I should slow down, but just was in a zone. The cop has his radar off, till I was right on top of him.

My radar detector and CB have both paid for themselves so many times over it is not even funny. I drive around 4k miles a month and I just couldn't get it done without them both...and my XM.

Did you know...... that a bushnell laser rangefinder will set off the radar detectors :D

I just use my cruise control and have not bothered with a detector in many years.

I no longer feel that I have won a battle with the LEO who is monitoring speed.........

BTW have you seen the new radar equipment? It is instant on/off and unbeatable.

For your intended usage, I would recommend getting a GPS unit with speeding warning feature. My piece of junk TomTom has that feature so I'm sure pretty most all of them do. You can set it to chime if you go a certain number of MPH over the speed limit. If that's all you really need, I bet you can pick up a used GPS on CL for a couple bucks that will work fine.

My old boss drove 70 mph everywhere. Didnt matter 45 35 zone he was a lead foot. Turns out he had a radar scrambler. The thing worked good cause we passed plenty of fuzz without being hassled. But the I think those scramblers should be outlawed.
