0470 (that is a 470 ci 6 cylinder for those that don't know) aircraft on a 10' airboat

saw and 8 cyl (aicarft) on a 10' airboat. That is something like 630+- ci. Same guy had a 12 cyl he was going to put on something as soon as he could find a big enough prop

As a kid I had a 20 hp merc on a 12' sears jon boat that was rated for about a 5 hp. People would look at you funny when you pass their ski boat in a jon boat. Turning was not to fun

Had a 14 foot, 60 inch beam jon boat with a 60 Merc... It would fly... Litteraly.. Very Squirley...

The weight of the hull with console, deck, fuel, and battery was only about 300 pounds, add the weight of the motor (175 lbs.?) add my skinny 135 lbs frame and prepare to take flight.. :D

I never found out how fast it would really go because it would try to take off past about 3/4 throttle...

The nice part was I could cruise at about 35 MPH with about half throttle and a full load of gear, and burn less gas than with the 20 HP I had before...

Think I'll get another and go for a little more beam and a 70HP... Hummm.. :p

Boy Snapperbait and Combo, sounds a bit crazy! :D I just love to see a little boat that will haul your buns past the big ski boats. It drives people nuts that have spent alot of bucks to get a fast boat and to be passed by a jon boat.

My orginal boat the "USS MAYFOAT" (may it rest in pieces) was a 12 foot steel hull row boat. Started out with a 1948 Neptune that ran perfect. Didn't push it fast enough so traded it for an 18 horse evivrude. Don't know how fast it would go, but a buddy of mine said I passed him when he was at WOT going 45. Might be why I don't care about going fast anymore

Re: You've got to be kidding!

I saw a guy on the lower river with a homemade airboat comprised of a jonboat hull (maybe 16') an old car V8 and an airplane prop. The prop was pitched the wrong way so the motor had to be mounted output forward with the prop on the front. There was no cage over the prop and the driver's seat was naturally about two feet in front of the spinning prop. I couldn't wait until the guy was out of sight. I was sure I would see him hit a wake and get tossed into that spinning prop. Very scary.

Recently had the opportunity to watch a marine tech buddy of mine prep a new 42' Baja with triple jazzed-up MerCruiser 502's. Whadda ya wanna bet the owner stood no more than 5'4??
More money than sense, I reckon...

Walt

Re: You've got to be kidding!

Years ago I had a 13' runabout type deal with a 115 V4. Thank goodness the props we had back then werent all that great.

We redid a 32 Excalibur one time and put 3 V8 Johnsons on it. The first time I went to the gas station a guy walked up and just kept looking at the motors and saying "Wow! 3 V8's". Finally he looked at me and said "Why 3 V8's?". I gave him the obvious answer - There isnt room for 4.

Re: You've got to be kidding!

A bunch of years ago a buddy and I had a Glass G-3 (think it was 15') with a 115 Black Max. All I can say is it was FAST. Anything over 3/4 throttle and the a$$ end would squirm around (scary even for a teenager) but we pushed it more then once. Wouldn't mind going that fast now but with a much more stable boat. I now do 65mph with my 1972 John Allmand 19'. Very stable at speed even in a wake.

I was in my 11' whaler in boston horbor and I jumped the wake of a harpoon cruse boat the wake launched me about 4 feet out of the water and I came down bow first and got the wheel to the gut. I didn't do that again!!!!! ;)

PS.This is my first post and I will try to post here as much as much as I can. I have my hands full with 2 other boating boards so I will do my best.

11
