On night shift at the moment and got a call last night that made us wonder if the call was a "Candid Camera" type stunt.............................

Dispatcher called us on the radio while we were on refreshment break (coffee and donuts are a universal thing!)

"A lorry driver has just called us to say he has lost his trailer and doesn't know where it is" :^

We were given a rough location as to where he last saw it and headed there at high speed: slowing down as we approached just in case................

And no, he wasn't joking/on drugs/boozed up/kidding!

In the inside lane of an unlit section of our motorway, standing alone and in darkness, was a twenty foot long container trailer. First thing we did (after parking behind it with our lights flashing obviously!) was check underneath it to make sure there wasn't a car embedded halfway down the trailer! (There wasn't, thank goodness!).

Driver returned and met us.........very shame-faced and shaken. He didn't/couldn't tell us when he noticed that the trailer had gone walkabout but he did admit that he was very tired and he had noticed that the truck seemed to have more power than normal!

It might sound strange but we could see how he might have missed the trailer; his rig comprised a tractor unit with two trailer containers: he still had the front one and both units had been empty

I just dread to think what would have happened if the road hadn't been so quiet and we hadn't got there so quickly..............................might have been rather messy :'(

Re: You've lost what?????????

I heard about that on the radio this morning Stan, I thought it was a wind up when I first heard the story. Your right it could have been far far worse.

I dread to think what his mate's are going to say, he'll be the butt of many a joke for a long time.

Re: You've lost what?????????

Wow we made the news!! Not for the first time but usually it's when I shut the motorway because I get bored on nightshift :^
Last time I shut the whole motorway was because of the 70,000 plastic bottles that spilled out from a wagon following a crash.........oh how we laughed :'(

Did you hear the other story yesterday RPJS? The 5 metre diameter hole that opened up in the road and six (!) cars drove straight into it! I knew parking could be a problem in some areas but I didn't realise that it was that bad!

Oh well, only one more nightshift and then the weekend beckons...............and some decent sleep, I'm finding it very difficult to sleep at the moment on nightshift especially with my partner screaming "wake up Stan, you're the driver!!!!!" 8):^

If your partner ever does fall asleep on you, here is what you do.
Pull up in front of a parked truck (Lowery), so you are facing windsheild to grill, Then scream. Did that once to the wife, had a few bruises but the reaction was worth it!

That hole was just outside Worksop if I remember right.
You have to be a pretty bad driver to be the first person to drive into it, how 6 people could do the same thing is beyond me.

Were they all blond????

Re: You've lost what?????????

Well just a quick update on this story because we had an almost identical incident the other night.................

It's just after 10pm and it's dark, very dark. The dispatcher comes on the radio to say "We're getting reports of a farm trailer unlit in a live lane, vehicles swerving to avoid it".
We deploy immediately with two vehicles.

As we approach the location I switch on the illuminated message board in the back of my vehicle saying "DO NOT PASS" and promptly get overtaken by a car travelling at high speed. I position my vehicle straddling the centre of the road to block anyone else from overtaking and just over the next rise in the road I see a scene of mayhem in front.

The trailer is no longer in a live lane, it is lying in the central reservation (median) and the car that overtook me is on the shoulder in bits and pieces. The driver was unhurt but very badly shaken and his excuse for overtaking me? He didn't see the sign

Guess he paid the price for that one.

The trailer had been lost by the tractor when the towing eye sheared off: farmer charged with "driving an unroadworthy vehicle" but could have been facing a far more serious charge if the car driver had been injured or killed.

I'm glad to see that stuff happens in other Countries also.
It's an everday thing here in Kentucky to see farm equipment and the like doing silly things like that.

Unlit farm equipment is truly a sad thing to run at night. Lost my right leg to just below the knee because of a farmer that was pulling a feed wagon with no lights or slow moving vehicle sign. If he hadn't of been making a left turn (with no signal) I would've slammed right into the back of him. Luckily, my headlights caught the reflector on his front quarter panel (the turn signal that should've been flashing). Long story short, I swerved and missed him but got a guard rail instead. Spent 12 weeks at a trauma hospital where young (nice) nursing school interns worked. Met a lot of cuties and had root beer floats every afternoon. No complaints, as I was 16 at the time and in love with about three of the nurses. Hee Hee

I was nearly a victim of something like this a few years back. I was on the way somewhere at 4am and the rig 100 yards ahead of me changed lanes, switched on his hazard lights and immediately disappeared completely.

There was an unlit 45' box trailer on fire in the inner lane-but the fire hadn't got through the sides so the black smoke cloud had just settled below a thermocline in the valley the road was in and by the time I realised what was going on all I could do was change lanes and try to slow down.

My poor (now very sadly deceased) dog was sat in the passenger seat with his head out the window. He wasn't too impressed when I grabbed his tail to pull him in.

Luckily I managed it and got his window shut in time-just as I approached the trailer the side collapsed and I had no choice but to drive through the fireball. The passenger side of the cab was scorched afterwards.

Yuk Yuk Yuk 8)

Never been to Worksop and from the sounds of it I won't be in a hurry to go now, thanks Nos! d:)

Nos, that incident sounds pretty grim too. Amazing how many wagons end up in flames!

Had an incident about a month ago when a trucker saw a metal ingot (approx 3 foot square) fall from a lorry he was following. His reactions weren't as quick as yours (of course he was only doing 56mph allegedly!) and he removed his sump on the debris. Major headache for all concerned: massive amount of oil on a very busy slip road. People were very unimpressed because we had to close the road and get the gritters out to treat the spillage; even had a motorbike try and break the block.....................until he saw the oil :^
