Re: yr. sticker on your boat

Just got the new decal for mine today. Boats and trailers here in WV are registered for 3 years. Boats are good until April 15th or 30th. All boats registered here expire at the same time. Everyone, who registers a boat from now until 2017 will receive the same 2017 decal I have, but they will pay a prorated price. I had fun at the DMV today. Bought this boat in Ohio, and had to title/register it in WV. The differences between the 2 states are crazy. In WV, I can sign a car, boat, trailer etc... title and hand it to the new owner. He takes it to the DMV and they switch it to his name. Ohio requires 2 notary stamps on their titles. Ohio does not require a trailer title, WV does. Have to have the OH registration to get a WV title. Well, that and 3 legs from a left handed chicken and an autographed picture of Elvis or something. I hate to say this but I think it would be nice if all states adopted the same system for this stuff.

so I guess every state is different....CT is messed up anyway. how does your state work.(VA)

we end up with so many stickers that I feel like they are holding my boat together.

The state #'s stick on but don't change.
The registration stickers are annual, but often the glue isn't waterporrof so you have to get some more.
At one time we had city stickers, too.
Then there's the saltwater fishing license if you license the boat (as opposed to the individuals, who still need a federal FIN number)
then the USCG Aux safety inspection sticker
Add the conservation stickers: Ducks Unlimited, Coastal Conservation, Elizabeth River, Chesapeake Bay Foundation
Marinas and boat club stickers

For our trialers, we get permanent plates, but if it has brakes, it gets inspected annually--and gets a sticker for that.

Here in Washington the boat sticker expires every June. They just passed a law to get lifetime trailer tags. I am just waiting for it to take effect.

We have so called permanent registration for our trailers here in New Mexico except they are not really permanent. After I registered the new-to-me trailer I bought last year I realized that my registration expires on the last day of January in the year 2050. And, right under the expiration date it says "IMPORTANT:THERE IS A PENALTY CHARGE FOR FAILING TO RENEW BY THIS DEADLINE". I'll be a hundred and sixteen years old then and if I'm still around you can bet your bottom dollar I'll be glad to pay for a new set of "permanent plates! Be glad to pay a penalty if I do forget to renew on time too! LOL.

it expires april 1st of the year on the sticker. if you bought it in WV then all you need is the signed WV title. otherwise you need a notarized bill of sale and said chicken legs, elvis and 1st born. I found out when I bought my boat in VA and waited till a year later to go to the dmv, by which time had lost track of the seller:facepalm:. luckily the notary at work needed her car fixed:D

Hey coolbri. Yeah, if I had bought it in WV, it would have been simple. Ohio titles need to be notarized in 2 places. The one I had was only stamped in one. Got the second section notarized then it was smooth sailing so to speak. Still took me 2 trips to the DMV. Oh well, it's taken care of now. Registered and will have a WV title in a couple weeks so all is good.

Illinois started requiring registration on canoes when I was in Viet Nam so my dad just registered them in his name and kept reregistering them every 3 years. When he died i went through lots of hassles and red tape to get them into my name, now that they need to be renewed Illinois has changed the law and I only need a $6 a year water use sticker...you even need one for a tube to float down the river.

Re: yr. sticker on your boat

Sure but the bummer is my trailer is a yearly renewable here in MN. They won't give me a lifetime like so many other trailers that carry small boats.

I believe 4,000 lbs gross carrying weight is the cut off, which puts 18' boats right on the line, of course it depends which box is checked by the dealer when sold new. I've owned a 19' fiberglass boat on a lifetime license trailers and an 18' fiberglass boat on yearly license plate trailers.

I too have tried to get it switched with no luck.

The yearly trailer tax is about $10 but the "fees" they pile on for it are another 6 or something, so the taxes on the trailer tax are 60%. (sorry for the mini rant)

Yep the title has it at one pound over the limit to qualify for lifetime. I think it is the actual trip to the DMV that bothers me more than anything. So many reasons to be annoyed.
