ratcheting sound is making me really nervous..

When the prop is engaged (F or R) it is "locked in" to the drive and does not "ratchet" no need to worry:). Works the same as your socket wrench, when you are turning a bolt.

ya look good to me man.

on this ratcheting thing.

the gears and the shift dog in the lower are whats called undercut. meaning that when they are engaged they tend to lock together. this is the reason for the shift interrupt. these gears when under load just lock themselves together tight, the more load, the tighter they want to stay engaged. conversely, if your to rotate them the wrong way. they just walk up the ramp of the gears and fall off the edge of the gear teeth. this is what makes the ratchet sound. have ya ever been in fwd going along on the water and accidentally killed the eng. while still in fwd. it'll ratchet big time till the force of the water can no longer spin the prop.
hope that makes sense. best pic i've seen of the clutch dog and engagement of the gears is here. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=1930449#post1930449 Don S's article may also help you understand how the shift dog and gears interact along with the reason for the shift interrupt..

i think yer good to go...

edit... nice video to man..
