Re: Zinc Anode - Bias Adjustment Q

I know you've been here for a while now.... and have received help from many... but looking up drives in '85... Mercruiser didn't make the 3.0 till '87  and it had an Alpha One drive on it.

so exactly what anode are you referring to? the trim tab anode?

if you click on the attached pic from the "Adults Only sticky":

"A" stands for Alpha One

see this link from the sticky ;)

They may not have called it a 3.0l but they made it in the 140 name.

As far as setting the anode, check the manual. It has the instructions. It will probably take a few runs to get it right.

Ok, thanks. Thought there might be a way to preset. Known prop rotation direction, so many degrees offset, etc

I could supply the serial numbers from both '85 engine and drive but the latest upgrade on my MacBook ate my boat folder. I had the manual and all my notes in there. Including photos and videos. Pissed me off.

Just restore that folder from your backup....

Yes, the 3 litre started life as a Mercruiser '140' back in 1968....

Carbonite. It works and is cheap. I even use it on some of the servers I work on.

I use Microsofts' SyncToy. I have a desktop and a Laptop, both setup as close as possible the same. So each is a 'backup' for the other. I use a 1TB USB hard-drive as the transfer medium between them, so that's the second tier backup. Oh, and NOTHING is backed up 'on-line', in a 'cloud' or on some else's machine. I hear some governments have already enacted legislation to enable them to view private files stored in 'public'..... I have nothing to hide, but I'd rather not have some spook eyeballing my PRIVATE information....

Personally I have a server setup with Raid drive array. Any file that I care about goes on there. I usually recommend Carbonite to my customers because it is easy and less then the price of pretty much any other setup. It is also unlimited so they don't have to worry about upgrading hardware later.

I have an external hard drive that I backup to regularly... with an auto program. I started running out of room on the full backups, so I selected only my most critical files to backup. Guess which folder didn't make the grade... and guess which folder has my boat's history, reference docs and manuals, photos and videos?

Trying to rebuild my service folder... anyone know where I can download the Mercruiser #10 service manual? Also, #6?
Thanks.

Re: Zinc Anode - Bias Adjustment Q

Okay, before we put this thread to bed, no one has set the trim tab anode on a MercCru 140? Too many variables to suggest an offset? If so, what's the procedure for calibrating?

Is it listed somewhere in the drive service manual?

Thanks.

Re: Zinc Anode - Bias Adjustment Q

The procedure is to move the back of the tab in the same direction as the pull of the steering wheel. If the boat pulls right, adjust the tab so its trailing edge is to the right.

And yes, too many variables....

Question from a Newbie...

It works as a Trim Tab on an Aileron or a Tab on a Rudder works if not mistaken. :plane: They are there to make slight adjustments to flight to prevent flying skewed through the air.

When misaligned, you are spoiling the water that is passing the drive, and by making slight adjustments port or starboard, you are eliminating the drag on the steering correct?

If the new one is similar to the one that is on it currently and there is no issues with steering now (or before the damage), wouldn't it save a lot of time and frustration by crib marking the one that is there before removing it? Like measuring a tie-rod before removing and replacing it.

Seems like it wouldn't be a "complete shot in the dark" and it should be close providing that it is close to the same as the one being removed or am I missing something? But they would have to very similar in thickness, shape, and length.
