Re: Zinc Anode - Bias Adjustment Q

Question from a Newbie...

It works as a Trim Tab on an Aileron or a Tab on a Rudder works if not mistaken. :plane: They are there to make slight adjustments to flight to prevent flying skewed through the air.

When misaligned, you are spoiling the water that is passing the drive, and by making slight adjustments port or starboard, you are eliminating the drag on the steering correct?

If the new one is similar to the one that is on it currently and there is no issues with steering now (or before the damage), wouldn't it save a lot of time and frustration by crib marking the one that is there before removing it? Like measuring a tie-rod before removing and replacing it.

Seems like it wouldn't be a "complete shot in the dark" and it should be close providing that it is close to the same as the one being removed or am I missing something? But they would have to very similar in thickness, shape, and length.
I think the original one that the OP is asking about is broken off. It happened to me on a boat so you have no place to start unless you have pictures or some other way of knowing where it was.

Set it in the centre position, take the boat for a drive. Adjust accordingly.

Yes, the fin is broken off. I'll start in the center and go from there. Q: do little adjustments make big changes?

If it's pulling hard, make big adjustments. If it's only pulling slightly, make smaller adjustments...

Okay, makes sense now. I'll shut up.

Even if it is broken off, the base is still in there, and you may be able to tell where it was pointed as long as you remember to look before you remove it.

Okay, that makes sense. At what speed do you test for pull? Seems at low speed what might be small pull could be significant at higher speeds?

Yes, the base is attached. Its still under wraps presently (under snow too! But hoping for a quick thaw). I'll make note of the position if possible. Thanks.

Once you have it close, normal cruising speed. Remember that it will vary with trim angle too. You won't get it completely perfect at all trim angles and speeds, but you should be pretty close.
