I have heard from some retailers that ZC is outlawed by the EPA and no longer stocked.

I did buy enough for minor painting recently, but I'm wondering if you've heard anything similar?

I don't know about being banned, but the OSHA guidelines have this curious statement.

If zinc chromate contacts the skin, workers should immediately wash the affected areas with large soap and water.

What in the world is "large soap and water"?

I found it for sale all over the Web, but I wonder if it is ZC or a replacement primer?

Rust-Oleum still makes it.
They also make a self etching alternative.
Moeler makes it too.

I bought some at west Marine last summer, not cheap though. A bomb can was outrageous, $10-$15. Use maximum protection on that stuff, it will fry your lungs.

Come on now. It isn't that bad. Not any worse then spray paint.

i don't think it's zinc chromate, but Duplicolor makes self etching primer that's sold at mainstream auto parts stores like checker/Oreilly. about $7 a can.
to find the real stuff, try an auto paint supply store...that's where i've always gotten it. either the spray bomb or in quart cans

It's nickname is green death. It is a carcinogen also. I'm looking for an MSDS on it.

It's bad, maybe not as bad as Iso's which are ultra deadly (found in 2 part Auto paint or 2k, and in almost ALL hardeners), the EPA is slowly banning it too.

I heard that "rumor" (?) last year when I was painting, but found it with no problem at NAPA for around $10. No shortage here. Yes, actual ZC.

Don, is it much worse than the ground particles of aluminum that we all get a big dose of?

Well, I am sure that tiny bits of aluminum can't be worse than fiberglass at least, right? :)
