I added a pint of old school GM EOS to my brand new crate 350 today.

Just keep your RPM's up & break it in like you "rent" it! Don't idle for extended periods & no WOT for extended periods. 2000 to 3500 rpm for couple hours, you should be good to go! Eyeball on temp gauge, always!

In my region, Rotella T has approx 1300 ppm of zinc - same as always
so if anyone feels the need to buy in to the hype, there's a good oil to use.
If you don't buy the hype- still a good oil in a boat engine without an oil cooler imo.

I love how everyone wants to pour in additives, when they don't know what's in there already.

Didn't know that, Sterndrive, Thanks.

I have always used it in a diesel motor and now use it my gas. I guess I'm good with it.

oops- I'm eating my words here- I don't see zinc now in the 30WT Rotella T msds sheet (US), but 30W Rotella R has 3-5%

and the 1300ppm from the last oil sample I sent in was 10W30 Rotella multigrade....and this is Eastern Canada -oil formulations are quite different regionally in bulk oil...don't know about consumer packaged, but Shell oil in Western Canada is quite different than Ontario in my experience

I guess the lesson is: sample what you are using - for $20 or so, you can find out Zinc Dithiophosphate ppm of your new oil

There are some studies and comparisions on the ZDDPlus web site. One of the tech briefs discusses oils specifically designed for use in diesels and heavy duty trucks. You'll see that they are reducing the zinc concentration in those oils due to the potential effect on catalytic converters.

I think the classic car cam wear information is important, even though it may be anecdotal. As with anything else, it's a case of buyer beware. It's up to you to decide if you believe your application will benefit from this or any other additive.

I believe the tech briefs and guides add constructive information to the discussion.

I don't have a 40 year old boat BUT, I just can't buy that the far better engineered oils (even dino oils) of today would need a zinc additive. If you're really worried about wear, run synthetic! It has far, far better anti wear agents, seal conditioners, solid dispersants, eliminates dry starts, etc, etc. Been running sythetics for 20+ years in everything I own and in no way would I ever go back to dino oils, my stuff just runs waaaay to nicely to do that.

Has anyone seen any specific test data on real engines, ie not just a chemical analysis? ie buy some new GM crate engines with hyd flat cam, (after break-in) and do a wear test with new oil, and with additive? Seems like a simple test that an additive company could commision to a non-biased test group.

Im new to boats.. Way board of cars by now.. any ways BG MOA is what i run in all my performace cars ect It replaces lost additives.... In the motors (crate) I have used the BG MOA Crates were less wear all together.. For $14 I run it in all my stuff.. I think BG has done alot of those tests.. Best of luck to everyone.. Sorry I meant in the 2 crates i have owned one was bg and one wasnt.. Bg was way less wear.. Every motor i do with the bg has less machine work. :)

zinc zddp has to do with flat tappet camshaft wear.
if the engine has roller cam then dont worry about the oil.

my old engines are flat tappet so I use Chevron Delo which has zddp and is made for diesel motors.
But I use it in the gas motors on the boat.

problem is they tend to reformulate oil, those posts are from 2007 and I dont know what is in Chevron Delo right now in 2011.

But I do know the EPA has been forcing oil companies to put in less zddp because it interferes with catalyst efficiencies.

Lucas break-in additive. 16oz container + 4qts of oil. Prelube with that cocktail, fire it up & let it run 1500rpm and up for 20-25 minutes. You should be good to go!
I looked at a DELO label the other day. Said nothing about much of anything. I wouldn't trust in brand new "non- emmision engine"!

I missed "it".
Also, won't use any oil without zinc (additive) or otherwise, with a flat tappet cam! Maybe over kill, it ain't your 20bucks.
