Re: Zoning regulations - Boat in Driveway

Trying to "Beat the System" with creative ideas will only make the situation more unpopular with neighbors which can also impact your boating enjoyment.

My inlaws had a family move into their neigborhood who refused to pay the annual dues. Anyhow, after a few big snow storms, all the snow was "conveniently" pushed and piled up on the road in in front of their driveway. The folks ended up hiring a backhoe to come dig them out. The message...... They have a responsibility to pay their dues in order to receive the same services available to those meeting the annual dues payment responsibilities .

I live on 12 acres in the country and am grateful for my elbow room. However, I would indeed be concerned if I found out the neighbor was going to turn their property into a landfill. I personally don't see anything wrong with a boat in the driveway but you should demand an explaination from the zoning officer to develop a mutual resolution.

Kevin

What I do on my property, if I do not physically harm someone is my own business, and no one elses, just like what happens in the "QUEF :D :D R's" bedrooms.

Re: Zoning regulations - Boat in Driveway

thanks for all of the input...FYI - the boat is brand new, so I would not think it's an unbearable sight...also, I take more pride in keeping my yard up than anyone in my neighborhood, and I'm not ashamed to say it...I'm actually impressed with the work I've done..I'm going to get a copy of the actual ordinance and look for the loopholes, it's only seasonal so who knows...I have thought about the $200 junker, but as a last resort. I could always store it at my in-laws, but that creates an unnecessary hassle when I go out...

Unfortunatly what you do with your property does have an affect on your neighborhood. I work for a large City with zoning laws. The laws are enforced so that business can exist in certain areas and houses in others. For example, if there were no zoning then someone could come into a residential area and open asphalt plant which would bring with it the smell and heavy truck traffic. Zoning laws were created to ensure that the value of your property is not damaged by some use that is not in character with the rest of the property uses in an area.

The same is true with neighborhood association rules. These rules are there to assure that everyones property values are protected. Association rules are voluntary, nobody forced someone to buy a house in that neighborhood.

maybe it's me....but I do not understand how a brand new $28K boat, on a trailer for the summer months can decrease the value to my neighbors???

I understand that if everyone on the street had one, it might seem a bit much, but it's on wheels and is portable, it's not abandoned....it's no worse than some of the cars parked around the development.

As a local Government Official heres my take. First Find out who ratted you out. We don't do anything around here unless it's brought to our attention. Next, See if you could get a variance stating that there is no other place to park the boat and have it accessible. It may cost you a $100 but in the long run it will be cheaper than having to put it into storage someplace else.

As I said before though, Somebody Ratted on you. Go make friends with your neighbors.

Tyan T. - there's no way to get it into my yard..I live in a newer development where they try to stack houses on top of each other....I'd have to back through my neighbor's yard to get it back there (I don't think they'd appreciate a 4500 lb boat going through their yard, and I have a detention basin behind my house so I'm sol with the back yard

I understand everyone's issue-free country and all that.

However, it is also the right of a club, neihborhood, etc. to be exclusive. (However, that's being tested-BOY SCOUTS)!

When I bought my home, I knew I didn't want to see vehicles outside and boats/campers, etc. in my view. Those are the rules and I knew FULL WELL going in. That's why I limit my projects to those that can be done inside my garage. And, my boats fit in the garage.

It's like whining about plane noise when you build a house at the end of a runway-go figure.

I had plenty of choices of homes where I could do anything I wanted (legal) and no one could say anything. I chose where I decided to live and knew the rules.

I cannot fathom why anyone disputes this.

If you live in a home owners assoc blame yourself for agreeing to the by-laws, you have no right to complain....if you live in public blame the local government....who says a SUV looks better than an expensive boat?...If a neighbor complained there are many creative means of paying him back without breaking any laws...no, I am not a redneck, but I am not a passive pansy either....Too many liberals with socialistic ideas instead of principles of freedom. It is your constitutional right to fight.

The only reason we have neighbours, is that we can't all afford a 40 acre property. If it aint boats, it'll be kids.. or fences... or noise..

Werdna Oi Oi Oi :D

I gotta agree with wvit100 on this one.I have no doubt that you keep your property in immaculate condition and that your new boat may not be an eyesore.Trouble is ,the city can't descriminate between allowing you to do it or a neighbor three doors down that decides to put a 28 ft rotting hulk of an unkept eyesore in his driveway dribbling rust stains down to the street.Well,I guess they could ,but they won't.

Park it on the lawn, hook an engine flusher to it, call it a fountain. Then hang a flower planter from the bow eye. And a bird feeder from the stern light. Call it landscaping. :)

Argue all you want, you cannot win this war. You signed this contract when you bought the house; and now you want to change the contract for your benefit. The amount of time and effort you spend agonizing over not getting your way could be spent in better ways, like enjoying the boat.
Get involved with the committee/council and you will discover just how far your neighbors will push to have their way, and why those rules are in place. If there were not rules, some of them would park their stuff in your drive. Know of a couple.
And yes there are Jerks involved in enforcing some of them!
Good Luck!

Re: Zoning regulations - Boat in Driveway

Hello
wow sounds like the same d*** yankees that are taking over the outer banks. they want to get away from it all then wish to change it to exactly what they left. to many rules. I live on 20 acres that my great grandfather bought in 1885. 3 years ago some town witches got together and decided that they did not like horses. tried to ban them. was a crazy battle with town council as there have been horses on this property for over 100 years. the town is like 20 years old. the 2 jersyites on the council retired nobodies from jersy. they tried to limit us two just 2 boats in our yards. this is in a village that fishing is the # 2 thing. its a small drinking village with a fishing problem. so we have to be vigilant or the yankees will take away your right to have a net skiff or 2 and a bass boat and a duck hunting jon and maybe a net dory for drop netting in the ocean.
and then ya gotta have a center console to troll for stripers at the inlet.some of us explained that they can take our boats and horses when my rifle is cold and I am out of ammo. which may take a while :)
Good luck and keep posting
