Very cool Ken...they did a nice job for you, almost as good as having the brochure! (of course I can't read it either) but in this case a picture is worth a thousand words! Hope you enjoy the boat!

Re: 1985 Doral Brochure.

We love the boat. Its light enough to tow with our Windstar, big enough to ski and tube and plenty for Lake St Clair most of the time and the other smaller lakes we visit. I used the translator link they supplied me and have most of it understood. Seems like both my boat and outboard are the original items. It sits kind of low in the water at the stern end and made me wonder if it had too much outboard weight ?? never gave any problems but it is reassuring to know. I hope this helps others with 1985 models.
Thanks for your support with this.

Re: 1985 Doral Brochure.

Hey Ken...don't want to alarm you or anything but if you truly feel it could be sitting low, what can happen in older boats if they have floatation foam under the floor and over time leak a bit the foam will absorb the water and become saturated which is very heavy, does the floor feel spongy at all anywhere? Again I don't want to alarm you but generally the fix is to cut out the floor, clean out all the old foam and then glass in a new floor. Don't know if that brochure you got mentions having floatation foam in the floor or not?

Re: 1985 Doral Brochure.

I think that its fine as I weighed the boat, motor and trailer then the trailer alone when the boat was in the water and came up with a fraction under 1,400 lbs. I too was worried about this but now I have the specs from the brochure my mind is at ease as the boat is meant to be 1,000 lbs dry, the outboard is 365 lbs and I had a quarter tank of gas in there and the VRO tank was half full. Seems to work out about right. The floor appears to be as good as the day it was new !! no sponginess anywhere. It pulls 46 mph (gps verified) at 5400 RPM with a 14" diameter X 19" pitch cupped aluminum prop. It seems to do the same speed whether I am by myself or I have 5 people on board !! I would like to check under the floor but dont really want to rip it up for no reason.
Thank You for your input and I appreciate your concern. If you still think I should look further into this please let me know.
Thanks,
Ken

I'm glad to hear it sounds good, especially the weight compared to the specs and the solid floor. No I wouldn't worry anymore, I had just picked up on your comment about it sitting a little low in the stern. I would just concentrate on enjoying it and having fun!

I think the sitting low at the stern end is just me worrying that it had a bigger than rated motor on it. Now I know it is at the max then i understand that it will be a little lower in the water than with say a 70 hp motor on it !!
I cant wait till spring to get out and about again. By the way, we will most likely be visiting Lake Simcoe this summer. Maybe see you out there !!!!!

Very cool. I have an '85 TRX - in the same tan colour they have in the brochure. My kids call it "Retro". I like it! Manufactured the year I graduated college. Mind you, the music I listened to back in 1985 is on the Oldies station now, so maybe they are right - it is Retro!

Thanks for posting

Glad to see another Doral owner in the Doral section. They are a great boat. I have just got back from Georgian Bay area (Barrow Bay) on the Bruce Peninsula. Had a fantastic long weekend with friends and family at the cottage. The boat never seemed to be at the dock !!!! used a lot of gas though but if I wanted fuel economy I would have a sailboat !!!!
Boat is back on the driveway now awaiting it's "next mission"
Hope you have as much fun with yours as we do with ours.
If you ever need any help with anything you are in the right place for it. There are a lot of true boating experts out here.
I am off to check your boat out in the brochure now.
By the way, welcome to iboats.

Also one more thing. What motor do you have on yours ??? and what do you think of it ???? Is it the original or has it been repowered at all.
I am original with the boat, trailer and motor (so far!!!)

Re: 1985 Doral Brochure.

hi kenmyfam,

That's a lot of questions rolled into one... I am from Ottawa, and the boat is happily chugging away at our cottage in Gatineau, Quebec.

It is powered with an Evinrude 140 that as far as I know is original. It is OK...at least it starts everytime. This is my first boat so I am not really sure if it is on par with others or not - I am happy with it. Ignorance is bliss, I guess. I bought it at the start of this summer.

The boat itself is in great shape. Upholstery, instruments and the hull are mint. I have recently found some "hidden" problems... the floor is very soft in the back corner near the swim platform and will likely need some repair work over the winter. I am reading with interest in the forums about the projects undertaken by others. I'll worry about it in the fall. Right now, my family and I are enjoying what little sun we have and are on the water as much as we can be. My only regret is that I didn't do this years ago!

Cheers

Re: 1985 Doral Brochure.

Glad all is well with your boat so far. Do you still have the VRO system on your motor. If it is a 1985 then our motors are pretty much identical other than a little "badge engineering" and colour. Soft spot in the floor is not a good thing but does indeed sound like a winter project.
What kind of performance are you getting out of yours ???
Many folk wish that they had started years ago as well but enjoy now and look forward to the future.

No problem.
Currently looking at a 1986 20 ft Doral Grande !!!!
Cuddy enough for 2 to sleep and Mrs Ken is interested.
However I will wait a little before I make an offer as I may get the price down somewhat at the end of the season !!!!
Do not want to part with our current boat though so may be owning 2 boats soon !!!!

Re: 1985 Doral Brochure.

And about 30 minutes drive from me. I will call it tomorrow and go see. Boats are moving really slowly around here right now so I will most likely make an offer if I like it and let them stew till they really need the money. Hopefully get a call and go from there, however I might lower my offer a bit if they call back !!!!
Having said that if it is as good as the photos then I might just own it tomorrow if it is still for sale !!!!

Thanks for the info.

Glad I could help. I new you would like. Being close and seems mint, it has your name on it.

My finders fee is a ride if you ever come up to the Ottawa River. :)
