Re: Ok tell me about egg-nogg

Comparing any store bought Egg Nog to homemade is ludicrous . . . I make it every year and people who have never had homemade are always blown away. I make mine with Rum, Brandy and Bourbon and I don't make any for the kids . . . It is a special deal and I treat it that way (Grandfather started it). Anyway, it tastes more like a gourmet vanilla milkshake then anything else I can think of. The thickness comes from egg whites that look like little fluffy clouds blended in with the copious amounts of cream, sugar and the yokes. It is made in three steps, yokes with the sugar beaten into submission, blend in the cream and alcohol. Cool. Fold in the egg whites (beaten with sugar too) before serving and top with nutmeg. There is nothing about it that requires a Yankee or local taste if done right . . . Awesome stuff, and I get major compliments.

I've never had bad egg-nog, just some better than others. I have an old family recipe similar to QC's.

Egg nog as it is known in the USA is a non alcoholic liqueur which is bought in milk cartons.People like to add some zest to it by adding plenty of booze.
The Bols liqueur company from the Netherlands has an egg nog liqueur called Advocaat.
I would not be amazed at all, if egg nog is known in Afrikaans as advocaat.

Another yankee trying to explain eggnog.... ;)

The stuff at the store is simply mixer. Kinda like Sweet 'n' Sour isn't a whiskey sour till you add the whiskey.

Try Advocaat from Holland. Luv It. In the USA, Evan Williams egg nogg is the best IMHO.

Not so hard to figure that one out.
According to your posts you live in Capetown or if you prefer Kaapstad.
Not too many Zulus or bushmen would be interested in a liqueur like the one you inquired about. Most of the English would know what it is,so that leaves a boer from the Kaap kolonie to write these questions.

Re: Ok tell me about egg-nogg

kijk uit, daar zyn warscheinlick meer boeren hier.
Haagse Hopjes and Advocaat only a Dutch boer (like me) likes em'.

Funny thing there. If you call a Dutchman a boer he takes it as an insult, but if you call an Afrikaner a boer,he takes it as a compliment.
I will never figure that one out.

Have we got the EggNog issue settled? Try it, you'll like it.
I immigrated to the USA 50 yrs ago, I was 11yrs old. Learned English and became a naturalized citizen in '63. Never looked back and have basicaly never used the Dutch language for anythng, other than stupid little quips. At my age I have been called just about everything, "Boer" would be complimentary. ;-)

YES, I do use wooden shoes for floatation to compliment my PFD.....
