I took the 87 3.0 mercruiser out after replacing fuel pump ..;. adjusted shifting so it would shift properly .... set carb... and noticed it popping at high speed. So I got my buddy to drive while I PLAyed with the timing , but before it could get up to full speed it started popping really bad as though it were suddenly 180 degrees out of time .I NEVER loosed the distributor enough for it to allow it to jump time . Any suggestions?

Re: jump time?

I just put a new fuel pump on it. I left the switch on last night and some one said it could have messed up the coil.

A new fuel pump will pump water too, if it is present......;)
A bad coil might react like that.....
Do you have a water separating fuel filter & if so have you replaced it?.....

Are you setting the timing with a timing light?

It being a new fuel pump I did'nt even check the filter. WHAT do I look for? I thought it strange how it started all of the sudden and not gradually. wouldn't water come in slowly to the fuel supply?

Re: jump time?

It will look like an oil filter.....
If you have one, replace it.....;)
It does not come standard on a 3.0....
It does not take alot of water in the gas to make an engine run like carp!....:)

AND.....The ONLY way to set the timing is with a timing light.

Re: jump time?

Not really sure how to find the timing mark but I do have a timing light.

Time it with your timing light to undo what you have already done. This will save your motor in case you have advanced the timing too far.

Re: jump time?

well I found out what happened. I pulled off the valve cover and found a couple of bent push rods. I don't know if I got it too far out of time (will that cause it?) or if I needed to re-adjust the valves . I had the heads reworked about 6 months ago and don't know if I set them right.

If you don't know if you set the valves right, then you didn't. You really need to get your self a manual for this engine before you completely destroy it.

Re: jump time?

Correctly and incorrectly set timing on a 3.0
is the difference between a good running engine, and the need for major engine repair.

If you can see one or two bent push rods.... you might want to replace them all, not just the ones that LOOK bent, it's cheap insurance.
