Are the Chinese intentionally making toys and related items harmful to bring harm to America? Is this just another way to slowly get to us or am I just looking for something not there? Whats your opinion?

It is a bit more complicated than that.
The big European and American chains are looking for high profits. The way they do this is by contracting the cheapest possible producers and aiming for the highest possible profit margin in an extremely competitive environment.
These big chains end up with a 70% profit margin.
This means that the producer works with a wafer thin profit, while he is constantly under the threat of being dumped because somewhere someone can do it cheaper.Add to this the standards that are legal in China, but not here.
The end result is that these Chinese will try to make short cuts that would be legal in China for the local market.
In my opinion, it is not a Chinese ploy to destroy the west.It is the result of an extremely competitive environment where the Walmarts of this world rule and the little Chinese factories hang on to their livelihood with a sense of desperation.

KB, I have lately wondered the same thing. No doubt that their safety/health standards are different than our own.

As for safe lead levels. Who decided what is safe? I recall watching the History Channel about why Rome fell. Many speculate that it fell due to lead. They used it in their water supply and even for seasoning their food.

I wonder how many toys that I chewed on while growing up had lead paint. I know I chewed on paint chips because they tasted good, but the consequence I got on my bottom overcome the need to chew on paint chips. I was also taught at an early early age that if it isn't food, it doesn't belong in your mouth. I always got a swat across the mouth or on my bottom if I did..

BTW, lots of pottery that hasn't been fired correctly will contain high levels of lead. This can leach into the food or drink that is in it. Many people have became deathly ill from pottery from south of the border. However, it keeps coming in.

The Aqua Dots thing won't be over until all the stuff is destroyed. With the speed of news reporting, I wonder how many perverts are going to use this Aqua Dot to find victims. Maybe a bit over the top, but I bet someone out there is thinking on how to use it in their behalf. I hope that the parents that have been affected by these items get compensated greatly for their grief and sickness of their children.

IMHO, yes,,,,we are slowly being sold out in many ways intentionally. Its a sad day in Bedrock...........SS

These big chains end up with a 70% profit margin.

From the retailing accountants I've talked to, the sale price is 3 times the cost of goods. Maybe it ends up at 70% with the overhead subtracted from the profits?

China is know for cheap manufacturing, not R&D, not saftey design and not necessarily quality control.

They built what companies pay them to.

Most likely, the order will be like " we want 1,000,000 red dollies and we want to pay .23 cents each. Ship when ready".

My father and I were talking with one man about this mess. Well from what I understand the both my father and the man say that China was sending a product that had beeds in it that also contained a date rape drug and shipping this over here. I don't like the looks of the whole stinking mess.

Yep, those are called Aqua Dots. They are little beads coated with an adhesive. Kids take the beads and put them on a board/grid that allows them to be put into different patterns. After they are done, the child will then put water on them to activate the glue that bonds them together. So happens that the chemical make up turns into something like the date rape drug. I've heard on the news that young children (2 or Fox & 1 on CNN) are in a coma and about 8 others that it made sick. My question is was this accidental, or was it a drug smuggling deal to purposely poision or children. They all ready tried to kill our pets.

Re: What do you think? Is it another way?

nobody says anyone HAS to buy cheap crap from China. I managed to get my kids through their early years with little to no plastic junk and cheap chinese stuff. You just have to make the choice to avoid it and look for safer, more locally made alternatives.

I doubt that there is any consipiracy beyond the usual one of garnering ever larger corporate profits.

if you want to do something about it, you can start by not shopping at WalMart, probably the largest and most relentless purveyor of cheap crap from china. When you shop by price alone, you are going to get cheap crap from countries with low or no safety standards.

It would really defy logic and common sense for them to purposly taint products.

The Chinese went from a completely repressed, Communist society, to a somewhat free market ecomony in a very short time.

Their economy and standard of living are sky rocketing, mostly thanks to the United States companies, purchasing their manufactured good.

What would be the up side of ruining trade with a HUGE customer.

My guess is that certain products have always been tainted with some harmful chemicals, probably unnoticed, from China and other countries, as long as we have been trading with them. Maybe we are selling them our old lead-based red barn paint.

It is possible that maybe we just never have tested for them until recently and now that China bashing is becoming popular and many more products are being imported, the scrutiny is increasing, as is probably should have been years ago.

Re: What do you think? Is it another way?

Sorry about that SS, I seen you post something about the Aqua dots but I had no idea that they were the same as what we were discussing the other day between my father and the other man. Appreciate ya pointing that out.

I guess we got to consider that they may be selling these products to there own public in China also. Be interesting to see if there is a different method and or materials used in there "same product" that they are selling to there own population, compared to what they are sending to us in USA.

Having dealt first hand with the Chinese I can tell you this. The Chinese adhere to no officially sanctioned governing body regarding any safety and or health standards. For neither product or production facilities, worker safety or environmental issues. They will produce for you whatever you want period. Patents, copy rights, trade marks mean NOTHING to them. Given the chance the product you've authorized them to produce will be marketed and sold to any other interested party if they can develop a lead.

I think this is the point that everyone is missing. Its not the chineese fault for making the stuff its the corporations like Matell that outsorce their manufacturing elsewhere to gain profit. maybe this hit on their bottom line( and it is a big hit) will make them shift production back to this country and help out some people over here.
