The virus coders aren't dumb - why code something that can only run on 1.43% of the computers out there, when you can code something for 97+%? (OneStat.com)

About the topic: puddle jumper, I'd be very careful what you do on that computer until you get it cleared. Some of these sorts of mal-ware will not show up on a virus scan - they are not technically viruses - but will allow someone to access your PC from the internet.

The best case is that the malware is substituting ads and sucking up some of your systems resources. The next level of 'bad' is collecting and sending your browsing history to someone. You can also be

My old computer got so filled up with junk I had to get a new one. The old one still works and I use it whenever I go to some site I don't trust. Places like My Space and photo posting sites seem to be the worse for spy wear and junk IMHO.

HOW do I delete temporary INTERNET files and browsing history?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I need to do that on the old computer BAD!!!! and it would be good to learn how to do it on this one.

It depends on what IE you are using, internet explorer 7 you just simply go to tools under the tab marked general then you can delete the history. IE7 also has it listed under the drop down menu for "delete browsing history". Or if you a running XP on your start menu you can go to system tools and go to disk clean up and that should allow you to clean up all internet files, cookies or whatever.

Well, This computer is running vista. I found away to delete the cookies and INTERNET files and cookies. I was afraid that this meant I would not be able to get back to my favorite web sites without my pass word. But, that seems to not be the case. I wonder why? Oh well, every thing works do I'm not complaining.

Well, if you didn't need to re-enter the password then the cookies didn't get deleted. The two most common mistakes people make are that they check the little box that says "remember me next time" and use very simple password. I know a bunch of new Ranger owners that didn't even bother to change the default password (set at factory for every boat) to unlock/lock the system.

PJ, glad to hear you've been de-wormed.

Keep and eye on things, and if anything starts to look strange again, take immediate action.

Minimum 3 things *everyone* should have running on their pc when they're online:

1) Antivirus. Many good ones. My main pc at home uses Norton. I've got AVG on my wife's. AVGfree is a good (and free) AV program, usually rated highly by both PC World and Consumer Reports. Run only one!

2) AntiSpy. Also many good ones, both purchase or free download. The last evals I read are the free ones are good but not quite as good as the purchased (stands to reason). Spybot search & Destroy and Lavasoft Adaware are well-recognized free ones.

3) Firewall. Keeps the bad guys from getting into your pc when you're online. Windows has one built-in, but it only blocks incoming. You really need 2-way to keep a worm from phoning home. Again, many good ones, but I use the free download from Zone Alarm.

If you don't have all 3 types running, do it NOW.

If you ever have a problem these don't block, then try the HijackThis another poster recommended. If that doesn't work, save your data (*just* your data) and reinstall your operating system / restore it back to factory shipping condition. Nasty to have to reinstall everything, but sometimes that's the only way to get rid of particularly nasty stuff that got into your hard drive's root area ("rootkit")

Re: Whats going on with iboats

My new computer came free with a 30 day trial of Trend Micro PC-illin Internet security. Any reason to not just pay them the money and let it keep working?

I had Norton on my last computer. Not only did it not stop s**t .It then quit working just after I renewed it and gave them another 50 dollars. You can't call teck support for them by phone anymore without giving them money. You have to start a on line chat. It took 45 minutes for a tech to come online to my chat session. Then they took remote control of my computer and spent a hour working on it. After all that they said it was fixed and it still did not work. I , on that old computer, can not download new virus definitions. No more Norton for me!! I hate paying for a service I never get. I'm da**ed tempted to turn them in to the better business bureau. Nobody at Norton speaks English anymore anyway.

The guy that fixed the computer used the Hijackthis program. You guys are right on the speaking English part. Boy is it ever hard to understand someone with a heavy accent. I was lucky that the guy i got was easy to under stand. I use the telus security that comes with my service provider
in 3 years ive only had two problems with lots of teck support.

Aaarrrghhh!! Had you gone to spywarewarrior.com you would have 40$ extra now.

But, at least your PC is cleared off. Now - secure your browser, make sure your anti-virus is up to date and runing, put a firewall up, and never hit the 'close' button inside an unwanted/unexpected pop-up - use the X on the top right of the window. (The button may in fact be 'permission' to download something... )

Oh, and don't take any wooden packets.
