how about a hydraulic cam, .477 .480 lift and 268 280 duration with 110 lobe separation?? Is that enough lobe separation for a mild 383, 4 bolt, reworked, older style large valve heads, Performer intake, smallish carb (initially 600 that I have), compression ratio somewhere between 9 and 10 to 1

Per my earlier thread am making plans to upgrade the engine in front of the alpha 1 in my 18 foot toy from a 4.3 v-6 to a small block. I'm considering several options, but am leaning strongly toward a mild 383 (ie. 340-375 horse)with a strong bottom end set up for regular marine service. If I really want to do more with it later, I can upgrade the top end with newer vortec heads, roller cam larger carb, or beyond, etc... I'll have a complete, fresh 4.3 with new manifolds, and so forth to sell right about the time people are realizing they froze over the winter... this will help offset the cost of the upgrade some in the long run.

Oh, and after some thinking, I'll go with a new / used upper gear box for the outdrive right off the bat rather than waiting to frag the one I have on there now. Will probably 1.5 / 350 version, but the even lower ratio big block version with heavier gears if I run across one. Also will install a drive shower when putting it together. Hopefully that'll make the life reasonable if I don't hammer it too bad out of the hole, only run up to 5500 rpm on occassion (set more like 5000 -5200 as wot target).run good oil, etc... It's a shallow, fast hull that will weight no more than 2500 pounds wet, loaded and in the water with gas...

Ayuh,........

That's Way Too Big of a cam,.......

The LSA is well within the reccommended 109? to 112?,......
But,......
The Duration is Much Too Long.......... 214 to 218 is about as far as you want to go in a Boat motor.......

From Dennis Moore's book, SBC marine Perf, for a 383 or 406 with more than 9:1 compression ratio, large valves, ports, and free flowing exhaust system. (must meet all req) Flat recommendation: Comp Cams XE 262 H-10 Xtreme Energy Hydraulic.

Lift w/1.5: 0.462 I, 0.469 E
Dur @ 0.050: 218 I, 224 E

max power in 383 at 5250 rpms

Mtnrat has been building a 383 and has done allot of research. I believe he went with aftermarket heads and custom cam. Maybe he will chime in.

Why guess? You should call someone like Chris Straub and have one custom ground for your exact application and build. Fast and not too expensive. I had him design one for my 383, which is a relatively mild build for a flat 400lb torque curve and 350+ hp at about 5000rpm. You can get some expert advise as well.

MTN Rat,
Never heard back from you so that usually means good news. How did your run and how did the BBC in the ski boat run?

Hey Chris. The cam worked great in the 383. Idles around the dock like a baby and when I pin it the only thing left in the water on takoff is the outdrive, two skips and at 50mph in a heartbeat. Jeff's BBC Hondo also worked great. He hit about 100mph and has had no issues at all.

Good deal. I assume throttle response on both engines is quick?
