how about a hydraulic cam, .477 .480 lift and 268 280 duration with 110 lobe separation?? Is that enough lobe separation for a mild 383, 4 bolt, reworked, older style large valve heads, Performer intake, smallish carb (initially 600 that I have), compression ratio somewhere between 9 and 10 to 1
Per my earlier thread am making plans to upgrade the engine in front of the alpha 1 in my 18 foot toy from a 4.3 v-6 to a small block. I'm considering several options, but am leaning strongly toward a mild 383 (ie. 340-375 horse)with a strong bottom end set up for regular marine service. If I really want to do more with it later, I can upgrade the top end with newer vortec heads, roller cam larger carb, or beyond, etc... I'll have a complete, fresh 4.3 with new manifolds, and so forth to sell right about the time people are realizing they froze over the winter... this will help offset the cost of the upgrade some in the long run.
Oh, and after some thinking, I'll go with a new / used upper gear box for the outdrive right off the bat rather than waiting to frag the one I have on there now. Will probably 1.5 / 350 version, but the even lower ratio big block version with heavier gears if I run across one. Also will install a drive shower when putting it together. Hopefully that'll make the life reasonable if I don't hammer it too bad out of the hole, only run up to 5500 rpm on occassion (set more like 5000 -5200 as wot target).run good oil, etc... It's a shallow, fast hull that will weight no more than 2500 pounds wet, loaded and in the water with gas...
