All that stuff didn't happen to me 'til I was past 50, but it sure happened.

40? Not really.

As I careen toward the 5-0 I realized I had to do something. I changed my diet and started getting some regular excersize. I feel great, better than I did at 45.

Now if I could do something about the eyes. I'm a bit wigged out  over having someone work on them, Lasik I mean. It's still not too bad. Low light levels give me fits with small print.

Downhill was 55ish for ...reading glasses at 40...thats about it...now it's the "hereafters"..like in walking into another room.."what the heck I come in here after"
You must have "matured' early..(I'm still working at growing up!:rolleyes:)...but the hair sure does grow in everywhere but the HEAD!

I'm 47 and enjoying life... Turning 40 was no big deal.. As for ear hair, a pair of tweezers is cheap. Glasses? Had them since I was 8, so no biggy there. As for muscle cramps? 3 runs down a black mountain will do that for you:D:D:D. If it's a bit sore, it just means you're living. When it all stops hurting, worry! I do find that if I just sit around relaxing too much it's really hard to get going again. So I just have fun :D:D Scuba diving, skiing, sky diving, anything that begins with 'S'.:D

I agree with all the S', except skydiving. As my dad used to say; "why the he!! would you want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane?

This is my story also, reading glasses at 47, I know, what's with the ear, & nose hair?, wish it replaced what I've lost on top over the yrs! but I got slammed with a double whammy by 51, type 2 Diabetes, and a heart stent about 2months later  then mid year Quad bypass in 2000, then insulin started by year end at 55, and I thought I was in good shape working rugged all weather commercial construction for 35 yrs previously. My back's not so bad, just gotta be careful and not overdo, but the arthritic knees I've had for yrs, really are a drag. I can identify with symptoms of most posters here, especially Scaaty, that makes me laugh, but it is scary thought!

I think that I noticed more in the way of changes at about 45. As others have said, 50 is more of a wake up call than younger ages. Frankly, you just start getting much more aware of your general health condition and think about some of the health related choices that you made in the past. Life certainly isn't over (I am a 53 year old with a 28 month old child) but the reality of having more life behind you, than you have ahead of you, is inescapable.

Re: Did you see/feel a difference when you turned 40

I don't remember feeling any particular change at 40, probably the opposite. Even at my actual birthday I don't remember giving it all much thought. However now just past the 45 mark I'm becoming aware of the age bit.
I'm in fairly good health and condition but the time is here to start doing more on all fronts...not less I guess. As they say "use it or lose it". I'm intent on picking up either a good road or mountain bike and maybe start putting on a few miles on that...instead of myself. We pay more attention to our diet and nutritution these days but the 'real' high fitness, full head hair-minimal nose and ear hair' glory days are likely over.

When you turn forty look in the mirror and tell the whole world to kiss your ***

You are no longer in the business of keeping up with everyone, no one to impress........ just be yourself!

Forget all the horror stories...... you will soon learn that is what people 40+ do for enjoyment to make people turning 40 feel bad.......

There are no differences at 40...... just expect your junk mail to start changing to AARP advertisements........

You will feel funny when the music you enjoy is sold as an Oldies Collection on TV....... Your first car is now a collectors model........ you start to remember cheap gas and cheap dates!! :D

Just remember one thing......... You are the only one responsible for the way 50 treats you so take care of yourself.

You will not suffer from insanity......... at 40 you start to enjoy it!! :)

Or the music that you once considered to be "on the edge" is now used in Target and McDonalds commercials.

LOL,,, Bob, & Boatbuoy, right on,,,, Actually in my mind, life begins at 40, and 40 is the "new 30", 50 is the "new 40", and so forth, and so on. I've actually not felt old, or felt bad, just some health hiccups in between, just never grew up, :) So, I just go with the flow, but there's a lot of physical things my mind writes checks for, that my body can't cash,,, lol

Late 40's for me, all the old injuries started to hurt again. Oh yeah, the reading glasses.

40 brought bifocals! YUCK! But other than that, no prob (always had the hair thing going .. LOL). Wife keeps asking when I am going to grow up, so I must not be old yet ... and I don't really want to grow up! Will keep staying as young as possible for as long as possible. Can still beat several of the young bucks to the top of the mountain when hunting, so I must have a few good years left - and 50 is closing in fast!

Nah, 40 wasn’t so bad, that was about the time I sobered up from my misspent twenties and thirties. Now if there is someone here that can tell me about the bi 60 that I went thru last month?

Re: Did you see/feel a difference when you turned 40

Excuse me for butting into the 40 club.

I am 38 (or is it 39? hell I can't remember). Mine's turned gray but hasn't turned loose. Every day when I get up, something hurts. Every joint pops and creaks. I own a nose hair trimmer. I dress for comfort. Things that used to make me laugh are no longer funny. I think about how I would feel different if I'd taken better care of myself.

So take heed:

Don't smoke!

Eat a good diet of meat and veggies and get some fiber in your diet regularly.

If you gotta go, go. Don't hold it. If going is tough. Eat more fiber. If you don't, this WILL catch up to you. Nuff said about that.

Get plenty of exercise.

Maintain a healthy weight. It doesn't take much to wear on your joints and back.

Be careful how you lift things.

Get enough sleep.

Use sunscreen.

Wear sunglasses.

Don't "pop" your joints. Any of them.

Take care of your teeth.

Go to the doctor when you're getting sick. Don't wait till you're REALLY sick.

IMO, if you're turning thirty soon and you do all that you won't feel like you're 40 when it gets here.
