Well my son had to do a history project on black history month which is fine by me. He picked Barry Bonds and I asked why didnt he pick someone good like GW Carver, someone who really made a difference.

Anyway, me and my big mouth asked him what happened to Asian history month (my son is Thai). I told him to ask his history teacher when Asian history month is. Also when is Indian history, Irish history, Italian history, etc, etc.

I expect a phone call from the teacher any day now.

Asking a logical question about this will get you no where. Give the teacher a break . Its not the teacher who plans the course of study, the teacher just instructs it...Best to call a local school board member,,,,real late at night.

Re: My Son is Doomed!

I heard a good friend of Dr. King's speak once. In his speech he said he looked forward to the day when speeches like his were no longer given. I spent the rest of the speech scratching my head wondering why he was speaking...

At least it's still called black history month and not African American History Month... when they rename it to that to be PC, I'll be instructing my son to find someone with dual citizenship in both an African nation and an American nation... let's see the call I get about that one...

Ooooh, social controversy at its best. Yummy!

BTW, maybe your son wants to write about what a chump Barry Bonds is?

If your son is interested in Black History, you might suggest that he study Dr. King. There was a great deal more to this man than most, no matter their own race, know. Even the "I have a Dream" speech is about a lot more than the now famous line about his children and the content of their character. King was complex, he was intelligent, he was practical in a certain sense, yet he knew how to make things happen. I don't happen to be African American, but I admire this man a great deal for a lot of reasons, one of which is that I believe that he was more effective than many of his contemporaries.

With the PC euphemisms changing regularly to replace references to colors with continents of origin, I've watched the African-American squirrels and the smaller native-American squirrels in the woods outside our office. Of course, if I were in Yellowstone, I'd be watching the African-American bears, too.

With the amount of ethnic mixtures it would be "______________ History Day" not month to cover everyone...... just to be fair! :)

I thought this conversation was pretty chilled... so far everyone's been mature about it... and it hasn't crossed into racism, just political correctness... ooohhh... political... doh! :D

Black history is history, which presumably contains both great and not-so-great history, as it should.

Doomed?

Be thankful he is writing a paper!! ;)

Re: My Son is Doomed!

He is doomed cause his non-PC dad is teaching him to mouth off to the teacher.

I should learn to keep that to myself.

Still no phone call yet, I forgot to ask him if he asked the teacher. He was yelling it at the TV when a black history month commercial came on.

Eh, you probably won't get a call. These days, I think teachers are just happy if none of their students go on a shooting rampage.

The teacher only teacher the black history, the state education dept is the one who set the study plan for the whole state on what to teach. You need someone in the edu dept to ask why not other ethnic group etc....(why just black history)

Probably because the civil rights movement did so much to shape our current system. While some other ethnicities did take part in the civil rights movement, it was predominantly a black movement. Hence, durring black history month, kids are really only learning about the civil rights movement, not about Rwanda, Etheopia, etc. So really it should be called civil rights history month.
