Re: Painting white rims chrome???

I have seen boats with the spare mounted in that position. Mounted there you won't care what color the wheel is, or at least no one will see it. You could also mount it on the top of the same location. It looks like the boat will not come near it.

I measured the tire and that area and from outside to outside on of the tire is 25" and in the area of the red circle, that is touching the boat and the post. :(I may try it though. If it won't go on top, I'll just put it on the bottom.

Heres a cheap idea and what i do with my spare as it wont fit on the trailer. I throw it in the back of the truck and leave it there with the rest of my tire kit. Plenty of room for it even on long trips and its unseen. Problem solved.

Until it's stolen...plus I already have the mounting hardware because it was mounted on the trailer when I got the boat....all that is required is moving it. ;) I also don't want to add another thing to my list of load and unload items when I go to the lake....and I don't want something else taking up space in the garage. :( Thanks for the suggestion though!:D

Hey, if you lay it down on the frame you can use a tire cover.

I have an idea....why don't I mount it to the back of the boat on the transom and get me one of these tire covers in blue and chrome. Now that would be a smooth looking machine then. :D

I will tell you that spray chrome is JUNK... But a white wheel looks bad too as a spare if you have chromies... I have a hard time with that too..LOL O.C.D.

ANYWAY here is my suggestion for you, MUCH cheaper than buying or having the wheel chromed..

Buy a wire brush, and some sand paper.. Turn that baby into polished silver...

Here is a valve cover I did for a Toyota Celica

ValveCover003.jpg

That steel wheel ain't gonna polish up like that aluminum valve cover. It does look good though

Now we're talking. Great tire cover.

One of my trailers has a mounting bar that is welded to the trailer frame just forward of the winch post. The spare mounts vertically on that post. When I bought the boat and trailer, it had a vinyl cover over the spare. While the cover shielded the rubber from UV and protected the spare somewhat, it provided a nice, protected spot for wasps to build their nests. I found that out the hard way ;) I ditched the cover after the first year. The mounts can be bought as a bolt on addition. The tire is really out of the way in that spot too and never a chance it'll get submerged. A horizontally mounted spare is going to collect more dirt and water in the wheel features.

I wouldn't give up entirely on the chrome paint. Try it and see if you like the finish. Like was mentioned it may not be so critical as a spare.

If that doesn't work, I'd fall back on the old adage, "when in doubt, black it out".

I just use SS hardware to bolt on my spare. I'd worry that if it looked TOO good someone might want to steal it. :)

Well I took the tire off and the mounting bracket and tried it in a bunch of places and pretty much the only place it will fit is right where it's at. I may try the chrome paint idea next. If that don't work....I can't really make up my mind if I want to just leave it as is, or paint it black. :(

At that point, you might just want to buy a similar chrome wheel or a nice chrome hub cap.

Solved your problem. Buy this. You won't need a trailer and that pesky wheel problem will be a thing of the past. No need to thank me, anything for a fellow boater:http://www.yachtworld.com/core/list...s=1787730&featuredon=yw-en&slot=6&slim=broker

Current Price: US$ 18,500,000

Dang, and here I only have 15,000,000 in my piggy bank. Guess I'll have to save a little more. Wait a second, if I sell my current setup, that may just put me over.:p

Wow, what a boat. I guess you would not need a trailer with that one. It would definitely solve the problem of "painting white rims chrome".
