the two line pressure tank restoration begins.

to start with, I picked up the following tank off craigslist for 20 bucks.

it's a late 50's pressure tank with the plastic primer button, I thought I scored.

Re: duel line pressure tank restoration

then I got the bright idea that a restoration was in order, so I tore it apart.

after getting it apart, I noticed that there wasn't much rust on it or in it, so I fired up the old bead blaster and went to work.

take note of the tank top, being the protectionist that I seem to be lately, I noticed that one of the ears for winding up the fuel line around the top of the tank was just a little bent, hardly even noticeable, but still bent and I decided that a little bending on the opposite direction would get the ear back to it's original position, .....oops, aluminum don't bend, it breaks.

the good news is that everything cleaned up extremely well, and the tank doesn't have any dents in it at all, it's perfect.

Re: duel line pressure tank restoration

but wait, there's more ...

now that I'm needing a new top to replace the one I broke, I go looking on ebay, and won this one, it's not here yet, but on it's way.

$44.44 shipped to my door, my 20 dollar tank has now turned into a $64.44 tank, and I'm just getting started, this is going to be fun.

the guy that just painted my boat is also going to paint the tank, he says he can do an exact match on the original paint that was on the tank back in the late 50's, due to his trusty old color code books.

I'll keep you posted as this restoration continues, but so far, this is as far as I've gotten

i haven't got a motor that I can use this tank with yet, but in my quest for an antique outboard, you got to start somewhere and I might as well start with a tank.

meanwhile, I'm going to try to use some of my trusty alumiweld rod and weld the busted ear back on the origional top, don't think it's going to work, but I'm always willing to try.

Your talking to yourself on this thread! So I'll cut in :)

My alumirod stuff works great, it should work for you. I need to find mine now to re attach a busted cav plate.

Ok, what's a bead blaster and how does it work as that tank came out awesome. How did you do that? Is it like a sand blaster?

that rebuild kit is available at Napa as well, cross reference the numbers and the parts can be found through NAPA's web page, no shipping charges, you can pick the parts up locally, even the duel line hose, fuel nipple o-rings, everything it's found in the "small engine" section of the web page, you have to do some searching, but the parts are there

www.napaonline.com

you need to go into the small engine section, they even have the gasket sets for the newer single line metal fuel tanks, I got board at work the other night and spent a couple hours searching for parts, I found everything but didn't write down the part numbers, when I get to the point of actually ordering stuff, and do the search again, I'll be posting the part numbers here. when you do the search, it's best to search by part name rather then part number, that will find you what your looking for.

Re: duel line pressure tank restoration

as an example, here's the top to tank gasket, and as I find the rest of the part numbers, I'll post them to, these parets you can order through your local napa store and pick them up locally, but have the part numbers handy when you talk to the store clerk other wise, they may not know what your talking about.

and here's the part listing for the tank top gasket on the newer single line fuel tanks

a bead blaster is a self contained sand blasting unit, (see picture) it's been doing a great job on the stuff I've been cleaning, I'm also using it on the old zephyr outboard I'm rebuilding, I just haven't gotten far enough with the outboard to start a thread on it yet.

there's also a couple pictures of one of the zephyr lower unit parts I cleaned up.

I have 3 of these tanks I'm going to do, this is the first one, the other two are the newer single line tanks.

Re: duel line pressure tank restoration

The links that you posted only get to pages that says your catalog session has expired. How in blazes do you get to the required pages? Specifics, please. I'm going nuts.

ok, there has to be a better way to do this, go to www.napaonline.com, then on the left side of the page, click on "shopping online"

on the next page click on the left side of the page about half way down, click on "PartsPRO SE Catalog"

on the next page under the heading "Refine by Category" go down to "small engine, power equipment & lawn / garden" and click on it.

this will bring you to the area that has the parts for this tank, it's going to take some searching to find what your looking for but the parts are there, I have the exploded view of this gas tank as well as the parts list and when I get to work tonight, I'll figure out how to upload it here in a format that all can read, your going to want to use the part names and numbers in this list to do your search. I don't have the proper software here at home to convert this parts list and exploded view into something that's going to be readable through the forum, but I can convert it at work so it will be later tonight before I can get it posted.

I can tell you that the parts are there but some of the descriptions are incorrect, I believe this is why people have such a hard time finding this stuff through Napa, as an example, the tank top gasket is listed as a replacement part for something from 1990 to about 1993 or so, they were not making these tanks in the 90's but the parts listed are the correct parts for these tanks.

I'm going to order the parts and make sure I have all my ducks in a row as I put this together so you people know the exact part numbers, I just haven't gotten that far with this restoration yet, I'm still waiting on getting the tank painted and getting the correct color codes for the paint, and should have that towards weeks end.

I have three projects going at once, so I may be a bit slow, I have the boat restoration, the old Zephyr restoration, and this tank, the boat and this tank I think will go back together pretty fast, but that old zephyr is going to take a while.

Well, thanks for your effort, but been there, done that, and can't find a darned thing I'm looking for. Even tried putting in the sierra number and nothing.

Re: duel line pressure tank restoration

Man I am lucky to have stumbled upon this, I just did the same thing to my tank and have not been successful in reassembly yet. I am going to take it apart again tomorrow and see if I can figure out what I did wrong but I assume it has to do with how I assembled the diaphragm. I cannot get the tank to pressurize!! I have been studying the exploded diagram but it is kinda small for my eyes even when zoomed in. Does anyone else have any pictures or a larger exploded diagram that my crappy eyes might be able to see of how to reassemble this old tank? I bought it disassembled so I don't have the luxury of reversing the procedure.

Just a thought, RC. Does your primer button cause gas to spurt out? IF so, you're in business because the primer button doesn't pressurize the tank, it just gets the engine to run for a few seconds until pressure from the engine can get the tank pressurized.

when I get back to work, I'll upload a bigger picture, it took me a while to figure out how to do that one, so now that I have it down, I can make it bigger.

and yes, a bead blaster is the same thing as a sand blaster, some people call them bead blasters and some people call them sand blasters.

I got the other tank top assembly in the mail yesterday, so I'll take pictures of it as I take it apart, that should help.

I'll see if I can get that done in the next few minutes
