Re: duel line pressure tank restoration

not to get side tracked or anything, but when the new top showed up that I got off ebay, the first thing I noticed was that the gas cap was different from the one that came with the tank I found on craigslist, the short cap is the one from ebay, and the tall cap is the one from the craigslist tank.

ok, on the the reassembly procedure, this is going to take a few posts don't know how else to do it and have it make sense.

Re: duel line pressure tank restoration

keep in mind, I've never rebuilt one of these before, and I haven't got the new gaskets for it yet, so I'll be showing this with all the old uncleaned parts, but here it goes, if anyone has anything to ad to this, please post :D

step 1:
get the parts cleaned up, here's what the tank top is supposed to look like after a good cleaning, unfortunately, I broke this one so will not be using it, this is for demonstration purposes only.

I guess this would be step 4:

install the new fuel pump diaphragm as shown in the picture (part #47 in the exploded view) sorry to show old parts, but I don't have the new parts yet.

Does anyone else have any pictures or a larger exploded diagram that my crappy eyes might be able to see of how to reassemble this old tank?

Copied from one of Gerry Spencer's post when I was rebuilding mine:

I'm going to bring this up now, but we will be talking about it in a little bit, I think this is one area that can get you in trouble if you lose the disk valve, it's really small and easily lost, so pay attention to this particular picture, more on it later.

the next step, or step 5: (all parts referenced from here on will be referenced to the explodid view that BoatBuoy posted)

there's two springs in the duel line tank, a lager diameter one and a smaller diameter one, the small diameter one is for the pressure relief valve, there's 3 parts, the spring (#37) the valve (#38) and the washer (#39) those get inserted next, see pictures.

Re: duel line pressure tank restoration

step 6:

the larger diameter spring, but first a note on that spring and someone can tell me if I'm in error on this, but it's my understanding (from some reading I was doing) that sometime in the late 1950's that larger diameter spring was replaced with a heavier duty one because they had a problem with the fuel pump push button sticking, I did notice that between the two tops I got, one had a heavy duty spring where the other one had a lighter duty spring, both are the same diameter, but one is thicker then the other.

ok, on with the rebuild.

insert the larger diameter fuel pump spring (#31) onto the back side of the fuel pump diaphragm as shown in the picture.

Re: duel line pressure tank restoration

we're almost done,

step 7:

that little tiny disk valve we were talking about earlier. (#37)

I believe that this little disk valve could get us in trouble if we lost it, so when you take the tank apart for a rebuild, don't lose that little valve, it's pretty small, the picture explains where it gos, so I'll let the picture do the talking

Re: duel line pressure tank restoration

install the fuel tank lower housing (#38) then the 8 screws (not shown in picture) that hold it to the upper housing, and reinstall the fuel tank foot valve assembly (diagram numbers 27, 28, 29) and your ready to install the rebuilt assembly back on the fuel tank.

hope this helps, and thanks for your exploded views BoatBuoy.

Mr. Stuart, all your photos are fuzzy. Try macro mode on your camera or try from farther away and zoom in.

as I get more into the restoration, I'll see what I can do about getting better pictures, I know those came out bad, but at least, anyone reading is going to get the general idea.

Mr. Stuart, Thank you! You are a life saver! I have the springs all wrong, hoping to have time to take it back apart and do it right on Friday. Thanks a ton!

Well turns out mine is missing the tiny little disc valve and I have no idea where to find one. About ready to throw in the towel and convert to a fuel pump.

Don?t give up yet, I got another tank over the weekend and if it has the little disk valve, you can have it, I'm not going to be able to tear into it until this weekend though, it's the older style with the metal plunger, I've never torn one of those apart before so I don't know if it has the disk valve or not but my guess is that it probably does

Re: duel line pressure tank restoration

I did some painting on the tank parts, and was looking for fuel line and gasket kits for this tank, I figured the easiest thing for me to do was to list parts as I find them, this listing is for the duel line fuel hose from NAPA, according to their web page in their Parts Pro SE catalog the part number for the hose is SME 188051, it can be found in their small engine section on their web page.

According to the web page, it says, "This part can only be purchased from your local NAPA Auto Parts store"

It also goes on to describe the fuel line in the following manner:

Contents: Fuel Line Hose
Fuel Line Size: 1/8" ID
Marine Engine Manufacturer: OMC
Marine Engine Serial #: Double line, for pressurized systems
Replaces OEM Name & #: OMC 322656

And here's a picture of the fuel line as they show it.

by listing it this way, it also helps me to locate what I need when I need it, because I won't have to spend hours looking, I can just come back here and see what I wrote. kind of my way of taking notes :D

this next part number doesn't look right to me, but for a buck 59, I'll go to Napa and buy it and find out but doing some internet research, I find that Sierra part number 18-7111 is suposed to be the O-rings for the quick connector, but looking it up on Napa's web page gives you a completly different picture, but for a buck 59, I'll buy it and se if it's correct.
